I was wondering what Z's contract situation was. I recall the Cubs signed him to a 1-year deal before this year, is his contract up after this year or what?

They do, but without Boras we can Z to a much more reasonable contract...of course I'd pay the man anything he wanted but the Cubs probably won't.

I would give Z at least Kerry Wood 04-06 money to stay around. He is, other than perhaps Lee, the single most indispensable member of this team.

I don't think it is a nasty arb that is going to bite the Cubs in the ass for this strategy. it is a player, perhaps Z, perhaps Aram, who the Cubs spend years building up good will with, only to watch them say "thanks for the dough, going to free agency anyway."
