What's the best news for the Cubs in the past year? Z fired Boras.

Boras and the Cubs seem to work well together.

They do, but without Boras we can Z to a much more reasonable contract...of course I'd pay the man anything he wanted but the Cubs probably won't.

With the Yankees and Red Sox probably looking for him, you can forget about affording him w/ Boras as his agent, no matter how good the relation is.

I would give Z at least Kerry Wood 04-06 money to stay around. He is, other than perhaps Lee, the single most indispensable member of this team.

Z will no doubt get a contract after this year. I'm thinking 4 years with a option for a 5th year. 4\50

The Mets are locking up their young impact guys and I hope the Cubs do the same with Z and not wait until the last minute. I'm curious on how Z feels about the direction the Cubs are heading and if that would have an impact on signing a long term deal.

I've suggested it for years, and been flamed for it. he should've had a David Wright deal in place when he had as much service time as...David Wright.

The Cubs just don't lock up their studs in pre-arby times. They seem much more interested in going year-to-year through the arbitration process, and letting a guy approach free agency. They prefer flexibility 2-3 years from now over stability and cost certainty. And I completely disagree with their strategy.

Maybe that's because they never have to go to arby with anyone? I think if MacPhail goes through a nasty arb he might change that strategy.

See, if you lived on the correct side of the US you would be eating lunch right now.

I don't think it is a nasty arb that is going to bite the Cubs in the ass for this strategy. it is a player, perhaps Z, perhaps Aram, who the Cubs spend years building up good will with, only to watch them say "thanks for the dough, going to free agency anyway."

Funny, thinking of Arby's usually makes me lose my appetite.
