some gems:

Cedeno's lack of experience at second helped lead to two early rallies off Carlos Zambrano (12-4), whose nine-game winning streak crashed to a halt.

"I made a lot of mistakes today pitching," said Zambrano, trying to take some heat off his friend and teammate. "It was all my fault."

and

After Freddy Sanchez singled with one out in the second, Jason Bay hit a shot into center. Cedeno left second base uncovered on the relay, allowing Bay to stretch a single into a double.

"He's supposed to rotate, or actually say, 'Hey, get second base,' or, 'I'm going out,'" Baker said. "Ronny actually went out like he was playing shortstop and not second base."

maybe it because:

The two had not practiced together before Friday.

genuiss that Baker is.

Why would they have a young guy who finally got his bat going again changed positions mid season to a position he's never played? Easy because the guy that has played both positions has a gold glove and more service time. ridiculous. Ronny SS - Iztuirs 2nd base, fixed and everybody knows how to play their position and has experience there.

nah lets kill the kids confidence.

Do you guys ever cut the Cubs some slack? If you were suddenly uprooted from your office job and asked to do marketing or something...would that not take some time?

I don't like Baker any more than the next fan, but come on!

nah lets kill the kids confidence.

Yea, because, I'm sure that's the goal of the team.

what the hell have they been practicing the past couple days then?

Speed.

Defense comes next week.

So bunting must be the following week then?

If anyone wasn't expecting this, that's ridiculous.

Thre is some truth to this.

But seriously, this eppisode is entirely indicitve of how the Cubs run their team-or Baker for that matter. Brian makes an excellent point-why not play Izturis @2nd? If he understands the position, why mess with Cedeno? and if you are hell bent on switching Ronny's position, then why wouldnt you play him there THE FIRST oppertunity you have (Tuesday) and stick by the kid? OOORRR how about a minor league stint to learn the position? nope. Baker freezes his bat and when Ronny trips, baker and the media (Tow-The Line Sullivan) jump down his throat. The real story for Friday was teh offense still sucks. imagine that.

The slack comes when they stop saying and doing stupid things.

Sure it would take time, but most new jobs come with orientation and training.

It took the Cubs 3 days to get Ronny a 2B mitt. What! Ronny began the minors as a 2B, and any infielder knows that if there is a righty at bat, the 2B covers and vice versa.

How do you not know that you're supposed to cover second on a play like that? I admit I didn't see it, but what would possess you not to be at 2nd on a play like that?

Are you talking about when Bay took second?

If that is the play you're referring to it was because he went out to serve as a relay man as he would had he been playing ss.

Nah man, it's called hitting not bunting. Bunting is for girly-girls, dude. There will be no bunting on this team. Next week, it Doughnuts Retrieval Week brought to you by the Dusty Baker Foundation for the Awareness of Stupid People.

It looked like he realized the mistake and was trying to get back to the bag, but way too late.

Bone-headed play. Since he's learning the position, it doesn't bother me as much as his continued baserunning blunders do.

Let's put it this way - I think all of us learned who was to cover 2B on that play back in Little League. Cedeno has looked lost and timid lately, and the excuse about learning a new position doesn't hack it with me, this is very basic stuff any professional middle infielder should know by instinct.

agreed, you hate players that play well.

Why even say that? No one was saying anything close to "we should get rid of Cedeno because he screwed up that play".

Actually, what I was getting at is that his continuing blunders are being excused far too easily by the OJT training angle. He did play 2B in the minors, how could a guy in Pony League, much less MLB, not know what base to cover, not know how to make a pivot on a DP, etc. by now?? This is as much or more of an indictment of the "coaching" being done at the lower levels as it is on Ronny, but this stuff is very basic.

Understandable, but sometimes players make dumb decisions. Especially considering it's the first time he's played 2B in quite some time, I'm not going to indict Ronny for making a mistake.
