TD Bears!

Apparently the Chargers drafted Kurt Smith, who kicked the last kickoff, in the 6th round this draft, yet he did not kick FGs in college at Virginia. He was strictly kickoffs-only. He sure can boot it, but didn't have much hang time on the last one.

The Chargers just didn't show up to play tonight I don't think. That was nothing more than a stutter slant, the CB sat on it and then just let Gage release to the inside.

I'm late. But I'm very encouraged by the Bears this game.

-Grossman is too hyped up to start games. I think because he's been hurt, he's trying to prove he can be a star QB. He's overdoing it, big time! There are times (last drive before the pick) where he looks excellent. But he tends to come out of games too strong, and tends to try too hard for the big play.

-I thought the #1 D played well. Chris Harris didn't wrap up on their only big plays, but he played well otherwise. The LBs were great as usual. Wale Ogunleye had a nice showing. I think he's due for a big season with Tommie Harris getting more attention this year. I'm loving the DB depth. Harris isn't Mike Brown, but filled in nicely. D. Manning looks good. R. Manning had a solid game.

-Rashied Davis was impressive. He looks to be capable of being a solid #4, with some decent upside. Very raw still at WR.

Hey, I'm just happy Gage finally did something.

Ooooh, fog.

Well we were doing ok last night till we got up to Joliet, and it started raining pretty good. So we decided to skip the game, and head out to Woodfield mall instead since we were up there. I watched the first half of the game and Dave & Busters, and obviously the tackling looks pretty bad. Rivera said on the radio that the preseason games are the first times that they really have guys struggling to not be tackled. In camp, they can't really do that, for fear of injuries. He said by the time the regular season comes along, they should be making their tackles. Every player interviewed mentioned that as the big problem from last night.

That sucks. But yeah, Lovie didn't seem happy about it. He did say that it was his fault, though, because there's no tackling in camp. I also forgot that Harris was still playing out of position, but still, that was pretty ugly.

At least Harris is putting himself in position on plays. He just needs to wrap up. This is something that is taught, so the coaches need to address it before the season starts. I'm happy with him just being in the right place for now.

Also, I noted that now Kreutz is back, so the QB fumbles stopped....

Grossman is pressing, because he knows this is it for him. He needs to settle down, but everyone is ignoring several excellent throws he did in fact make, as well as 3 drops on passes that should have been caught (2 by Davis, one by Clark). Simms noted the Bear receivers were dropping way too many balls, as well.

The INT was stupid. Dumb throw. And I've got to say: if I see Gabe Reid on a WR fly route during the season, then that's just pathetic. Reid's a TE, not a WR. Too slow to ever get separation on a fly route. So I think they were just experimenting on that play since you would never see it in the regular season.

At least one of Rashied Davis' drops was questionable (it was just a tad overthrown), but Grossman looked pretty good at times.

The first down completion to Berrian for 18 yards was a good play fake, but he still had to throw it on the run b/c he was under some pressure...and it was right on the money to the near sideline. Then late in the second quarter, he hit Davis over the middle and then down the right sideline off a playfake to Berrian from the pocket on the very next play.

And with the Chargers' rush defense and no Jones or Benson, I'm sure SD keyed in more on the passing game.

Definitely. I'm not overlooking Grossman. I think I'm his biggest fan (having seen him in HS in Bloomington). I love when he throws on the run. He's very accurate, and tends to focus more on making a good pass, because his feet aren't planted. The play to Berrian was absolutely beautiful.

As I said, I think he needs to settle down earlier, and just move the ball downfield, not trying for the big play so much.

The pressure's definitely on him this year. I am a little concerned. I do hope Turner realizes this ballclub must run the ball to succeed. If we see Rex-a-delic passing 60%/40%, I think we're in trouble. Even if Griese is the QB, I still think we must run the football and run it well.

I think once we have Jones and Benson in there, the running game will be much more of a focus. I think Turner knows that's still where the strength of the offense is at.

I normally don't have a problem with Peter King, but this is just a dumb comment:

You know what's strange about watching bits and pieces of the Bears? They can't run the ball. And Brian Griese, especially Friday night against San Diego, looked significantly better than Rex Grossman, though Lovie Smith is still planning to go with Grossman as the starter. I probably would too, but I wouldn't be married to it.

Huh, trouble running, with our first and second string backs injured...that's really strange, huh Peter?

Notice he listed his recent travels, they included roughly 16 training camp visits and a stop in Chicago for the NFL commish meetings, but he didn't go see the Bears. In between covering the crap out of the NFC and AFC easts, and hanging out with Brett Favre, it wouldn't surprise me if he wasn't aware of the Bears RB situation.

The Jones and Benson rivalry really seems to be heating up a bit, at least in terms of verbal sparring in the media.

It doesn't seem like the team is very fond of Benson. I'd say it's likely these guys split carries unless one of them gets red hot.

Well the team thinks it can contend for a Super Bowl and they want to go with a proven winner. I am not saying that Benson can't do the job, but if you are on the defense you realize this could be your only chance for a Super Bowl. Freak injuries occur all the time and the Bears have been relatively healthy so far. Plus the Bears have a super easy schedule. This is the Bears best chance since 85 at the beginning of the season for another Super Bowl title.

Forget the proven winner...how about the best player? This is like Dusty refusing to play a rookie, because he want's the "proven veteran". If Jones is the better back, then fine...be mad about that. But wanting the "proven winner" is a lame reason to pissed a rookie IMO.

Those comments by King are completely stupid. He's just lost all credibility as far as I'm concerned.

I expect hysterical fans to overreact to the preseason, but not a seasoned sportswriter.

One wonders how the Colts made it to the playoffs last year after going 0-5 in the preseason

Jones had the only 1300 yard season by a Bear RB outside of Payton with a terrible QB who they stacked 8 at the line every play. The Bear D doesn't want to lose games just because Angelo wants his guy in there. With that said, when Benson played last year he did well. Jones might not be proven, but he is more proven that Benson as far as the NFL goes.

Brad Biggs' piece in today's Sun-Times.

Bears running back Cedric Benson was back on the practice field Monday wearing an orange quarterbacks jersey -- but no visible marks from the scolding he received from coach Lovie Smith for leaving the sideline Friday during a preseason game against San Diego and skipping the mandatory postgame meeting.

Teammates didn't approve of Benson's early exit and brought it to the attention of the Sun-Times, which confirmed through a team source that Smith disciplined the second-year running back

Benson said he did not leave the stadium but watched the game from the office of equipment manager Tony Medlin. But team rules required Benson to be on the sideline during the game. He also was required to attend the postgame meeting in the locker room but did not.

Two teammates confirmed Benson left the sideline during the first quarter and wasn't at the postgame meeting. The players said they believe he left Soldier Field during the game.

When told that other players had leaked the information about his early departure, Benson did not seem surprised.

''That's cool,'' he said. ''I don't care to know who. Probably ones who don't like me.''

What is Benson doing? I have a feeling that Lovie wants Jones to play but is under pressure form Angelo to play Benson. Now he just leaves and watches the game inside? Weird.

Benson had head case warnings long before that weird breakdown after the draft. I hate the pick at the time, but I hope they can salvage something out of it.
