Could Barrett win the batting title?

After today's games, he's hitting .338 which would put him 2nd behind Sanchez, who is hitting .347. Barrett currently doesn't have enough at bats to qualify, but I gotta think that he will at the end of the year.

And I think his past two months have been WAY overlooked. In June, his line was .392/.458/.549/1.007 and in July his line was .386/.446/.639/1.084. Those numbers are sick! He's easily been our best hitter this year and either our best or second best player overall.

I dont think he will. He would have to stay that hot all the way though August for him to overtake Sanchez (assuming Sanchez continues to hit well). I would LOVE to see him do it, tho.

I don't think Sanchez can keep up his pace, so I think Barrett has a great shot. I just hope Dusty plays him enough in the next 2 months to qualify.

I don't see it happening but it would be nuts to have catchers with the batting title in both leagues. Has that ever happened in the modern era?

Only two catchers PERIOD have won the batting title, put that into perspective, and they won them over 50 years ago.

Another cool thing would happen if MB could win the batting title, it would make the second season in a row that a cub has won it (Derrek last year)

If next year we got the production of Lee '05 and Barrett '06.....wow, I'm just salivating at the thought of that.

Plus hopefully the addition of a big bat, and Aramis Ramirez 04'/05' I think we could afford to have 3 #8 hitter in the lineup

Nothing like banking on career years to win a championship :D

Your "career year" 2007 Chicago Cubs

CF- Pierre .327 .378 .415

2B- Soriano .300 .332 .547

1B- Lee .335 .418 .662

3B- Ramirez .318 .373 .578

C- Barrett .338 .398 .559

LF- Lee .305 .366 .525

RF- Jones .288 .320 .498

SS- Izturiz .288 .330 .381

-Of course we get both Lee and Soriano!

For SP We get Zamrano(any season baby!) and 2003 Prior... Of course we sign Zito(02) and Schmidt(03). 2001 Wade Miller anchors the back end.

Bullpen? Who cares. Let 06 Rusch close for all I care, he wont blow our 10 run leads. For Kicks- Closer: 03 Wood! On second thought Wood anchors the back end of the rotation and Vances famous Wade Miller for Closer BandWGN takes off again!(I was a proud memeber btw)

Bench?

05 Niefi

01 Nevin

05 Murton-over full season

05 Cedeno-over full season

WHO CARES

WHO CARES

W.S. HERE WE COME

-we also get goat and bartman in prime and whole thing blows up

Oh man, I wanna go play MVP Baseball now

Wouldn't it be pretty awesome for Mauer and Barrett to win in it the same year?

YES indeed it would be.

I'm totally pro BARE BARE. Among other concerns, I hope Dusty sees that he gets enough atbats; given that he's the best hitter on the team, that shouldn't be a problem.

well the thing is, Lee's career year looks to be what we can expect from hin next season if healthy. Barrett however, has had a pretty high BABIP (.342), so he'll probably see a dip in his numbers next year (somewhere in between his 05 and 06 numbers. Aramis has been heating up lately, and if we can avoid losing him, his 3 year splits should be expected (.296/.350/.532). But your scenario does sound pretty good :)

According to Yahoo he needs 331 PA's to qualify, and with just the AB's and walks he's got 318. I don't know how many sacrafices he's got but he's closing in on being qualified rather quickly.

Even more so (seriously) than DLee last year, Barrett is going to have the most remarkable amazing unrecognized season this year.

BareBare is kicking major ass.

The offical rulebook says you need 3.1 PA per scheduled game. Over a season that is 502.2 PA, so Barrett needs 503 PA to qualify

He's only done that twice in his career, 2001 and 2004. And each time he had just 506 PA. He needs to average 3.3 per game to get there, and each off day will make it all the more difficult.

It would be so Cubs like to have back to back batting title champs on worthless teams, seeing as how they are so enamored with batting average but completely oblivious to the more important aspects of the game which are necessary to actually win.

Wow-if there weren't any better anectdotal evidence to the ineptitude of the Cubs re: OBP-this team could have the worst offense in baseball for two years running AND have the batting title winner for both years.

But OBP doesn't matter, right Jim?

What other year were we last in the league? Last year we were much closer to the middle then to last.

They were last in walks, but 11th in OBP (out of 16 NL teams) thanks to ranking 3rd in AVG (2nd in SLG). They were .005 away from last place, but .009 away from the midpoint. So, while they were closer to the middle in terms of rank, they were actually closer to last in terms of the actual number.

Combined over the past two years they probably will have the worst total OBP.

The lack of walks is, by far, the single greatest contributor to the poor offensive performance during the Dusty Baker era. They've had good batting averages and bad averages. They've hit well with RISP and poorly with RISP. They've hit for lots of power and no power. But they've consistently been at or near the bottom of the barrell in the NL in the walks department (14th, 14th, 16th, 16th). It's a huge problem, they refuse to admit it and fix it, and far too many fans and experts accept that as perfectly OK since the walk just isn't the manly thing to do.

If Dusty would hit him 3rd like he should, then it shouldn't be a problem for Barrett to qualify.

They were 3.6 percent worse than 15th place in majors last year (729-703). They scored 10 percent more runs than the last place team (703-639). How again were they closer to last than the middle?
