PCL Notebook"]Iowa Cubs (Chicago Cubs)

THE WEEK THAT WAS: The I-Cubs went 2-4 last week to fall to 55-53 overall. That leaves them second in the American North Division.

THE PENNANT CHASE: Iowa is 2 1/2 games behind first-place Nashville.

WHO'S HOT/WHO'S NOT: 1B Micah Hoffpauir has hit .400 in his last 10 games with a home run, eight RBIs and three runs scored. ... OF Michael Restovich has batted .314 in his last 10 contests with four homers, 13 RBIs and 12 runs scored.

THEY CALL IT THE STREAK: July has been a streaky month for the I-Cubs. After losing four of their five contests, they won eight straight, lost four straight, then won five in a row before dropping four of their last five.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: "The first two days I saw him, [Michael Restovich] was really, really fast. I walked by him in the hallway and told him, 'Go ahead and get jammed a couple times. Don't worry about it. Slow down.' That's what he's done. He's a strong kid. He doesn't need to generate too much body to drive the ball out." --I-Cubs interim manager Bobby Dickerson to the Des Moines Register. Restovich homered in three straight games last week and has 17 on the season.

SL Notebook"]West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (Chicago Cubs)

THE WEEK THAT WAS: A 3-3 week left the Diamond Jaxx with a 19-17 second-half record. They held third place, two games out of first in the SL North.

WHO'S HOT, WHO'S NOT: Left-hander Chris Shaver, who reached .500 at 5-5 with a win on July 6, has gone 0-2 in three starts since, failing to pitch beyond the fifth inning in any of those games. PLAYER TO WATCH: The Diamond Jaxx seem to receive a nice payoff whenever Richard Lewis homers, which had been just twice in 214 at-bats through Wednesday. His three-run shot at Chattanooga with two outs in the ninth helped his team end a seven-game road losing streak with a 6-4 victory over the Lookouts. Lewis hit his other home run in a 10-6 win at Huntsville on May 31, in a game in which he drove in four runs and scored twice on a 3-for-5 day. In the two games in which Lewis had homered, he accounted for seven of his 23 RBIs this season. His homer on Wednesday was a blast that sailed over the scoreboard in left field at Bell South Park.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: Gary Cates slapped a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth that sent home the winning run in a 5-4 victory over Tennessee on Saturday. The hit ended Tennessee's seven-game winning streak.

FSL Notebook"]Daytona Cubs (Chicago Cubs)

THE WEEK THAT WAS: The Cubs played a .500 tune and 3-3 was good enough to leave them with a 22-13 second-half record and a three-game lead over St. Lucie in the FSL East.

WHO'S HOT, WHO'S NOT: Matt Craig's nine-game hitting streak ended, but he contributed two RBIs and scored twice in Daytona's 12-9 win over Dunedin on Monday. Tuesday night he doubled twice in four at-bats.

A DEBUT TO FORGET: Jeff Teasley's first assignment as a Daytona Cub was to protect a 4-1 lead handed to him by Donnie Veal on Tuesday night. Veal had struck out nine Dunedin Blue Jays in five innings. Teasley, along with two other pitchers, had just been added to Daytona's roster from Class A Peoria in the Midwest League where he had been 2-3 with one save and a 4.30 ERA in 29 appearances. The right-hander gave up six runs on five hits, two walks and a hit batter in just 1 2/3 innings. "For Teasley, his first time at this level, he had a really tough outing," Cubs manager Buddy Bailey told the Daytona Beach Journal-News in a bit of an understatement. "In other conditions we might have gone out there a little sooner to help him out, but with the addition of the suspended game [on Wednesday] we have a lot of innings and need enough pitchers to get us through. It's going to take us another day or two to see where we're at with our pitching staff." Dunedin won the game, 8-4. Teasley improved his second time out, but not by much. He gave up three runs on four hits over two innings on Friday.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: Ryan Harvey became the first player in FSL history to hit four home runs in a single game when he powered his team past Dunedin, 10-9, in a wild game on Friday night. He slammed solo shots in the second, sixth and eighth innings at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, then won the game by icing a four-run rally with a two-out, three-run blast that brought his RBI total for the night to six. "I was surprised they pitched to me there," Harvey told the Daytona Beach Journal-News after the game. "First base was open, and then he threw me a fastball. I wasn't going to let that go by." Harvey, who has hit 16 homers, but had none in the 10 games prior to the super night, said he'd never hit four in a game before. "I've never had a game-winner, either,'' he said. Cubs manager Buddy Bailey was amazed. "I've been associated with three different games where I saw guys have games with 10 RBIs," Bailey said. "I've caught perfect games, I've seen other perfect games. But I've never seen somebody hit four home runs in a game." Clearwater closer Pat Overholt took the loss that might have been avoided if not for a two-out error by shortstop Carlos Made.

MWL Notebook"] Peoria Chiefs (Chicago Cubs)

THE WEEK THAT WAS: The Chiefs struggled through a 2-5 week and dropped to fourth in the West, five games out.

WHO'S HOT/WHO'S NOT: OF Jesus Valdez is 8-for-21 (.381), and SS Ryne Malone is 6-for-20 (.300) with five RBIs in five games. SS Ryan Lilly is 2-for-12 (.167).

SHARK BITES: Jeff Samardzija, the former Notre Dame pitcher, finished his five-week tour of the lower-level Cubs system with a six-inning no-decision in the Chiefs' 4-3 victory over Dayton Friday night. Samardzija permitted two runs in six innings, one earned (on a Michael Griffin homer) and one unearned thanks to his own throwing error after barehanding a chopper. Samardzija was 0-1 with a 3.27 ERA in two starts with the Chiefs, and 1-1 with a 2.37 ERA in five starts with short-season Boise.

ALL RISE: The combination of Samardzija's appearance, a Jody Davis bobblehead giveaway and fireworks, drew 5,612 to O'Brien Field on Friday, about 2,000 more than the Chiefs have been averaging. Many wore Notre Dame gear and stood when Samardzija warmed up to the Notre Dame fight song. (Note to his next team: Since Samardzija's nickname is "Shark", Bobby Darin's 1959 hit "Mack the Knife" would be a slick alternate option.)

MILLER TIME REDUX: Wade Miller (right shoulder surgery) will make another rehab start for the Chiefs on Monday against Dayton. Miller hasn't pitched since a July 3 rehab appearance for the Chiefs.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: "Hopefully I raised some eyebrows this summer and maybe opened some eyes." -- Samardzija told various news outlets after his start Friday.

NWL Notebook"]Boise Hawks (Chicago Cubs)

THE WEEK THAT WAS: The Hawks went 3-3, bringing their record to 23-17, first in the East Division.

WHO'S HOT: Not many people are as hot as LF Tyler Colvin, who's hitting .442 in his last 10 games, with two home runs and eight RBIs, and has gone 12-for-23 in his last five games. SS Steven Clevenger has been almost as hot, hitting .438 in his last nine games.

WHO'S NOT: SS Matt Matulia has only connected four times in his last 37 at-bats, but still has one home run and six RBIs in that time. P Mike Billek has had a rough stretch over the last few games, allowing 15 hits and 11 runs in 9 2/3 innings, while striking out just two.

PLAYER TO WATCH: CF Matt Camp is on a roll, hitting .450 in his last five games.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: 1B Russ Canzler was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs score in Thursday's 13-8 win over Spokane.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: The Hawks wrap up their series against Salem-Keizer on Tuesday before hitting the road for a five-game set at Eugene.

Probable Starters:

Iowa: RHP Jae-Kuk Ryu (4-6, 3.76 ERA, 91 IP) @ RHP Harold Eckert (5-8, 7.49 ERA)

That rules out Ryu as a possible starter for the Cubs on Thursday. I think that's another sign Guzman will be up (unless the Cubs change their mind and hold Mateo back for the start rather than using him out of the pen).

Guzman would be the most likely candidate. He'd be on 5-days rest. Mateo would be on 7-days rest. He could probably pitch on the side or get an inning in and still start, though.
