Betemit traded to the Dodgers

Recommended Posts

maybe betemit comes to the cubs for maddux after this? would that sound like a reasonable price? he's an infielder, and we all know the cobs need more of those.

Why would we need a 3B?

He can play anywhere in the IF, and I don't think he'd be a great fit at 3B; his bat would be nice at SS or 2B though.

I guess the real question would be, why would the Dodgers trade anything of value for Greg Maddux? Maddux is not very good anymore.

I'd really like to get Betemit.

Definitely.

He could also give us some real versatility in the infield, which we know Dusty and Jim love. He should be easier to pry away than Ethier, but I'm not sure what we'd have to throw in on top of Maddux to land him.

In case Ramirez decides to opt out?

Take them out of the Maddux interest. I would bet the Dodgers are done making deals. They got the guy they wanted in Betemit. Being 7 games out of WC contention isn't a far reach at this point in the season, but leapfrogging 6 teams is tough to do.

The Dodgers have a better shot in the division (6 out, 4 teams to beat) than the wild card but the point is still valid. I doubt they'll be shopping Betemit, who would indeed be a substantial upgrade over the sad assemblage of drek (Walker aside) patrolling the Cubs middle infield this year. I'd do the VORP comparison but it would just hurt.

The question should be, why couldn't the Cubs package Dempster and a prospect to get Betemit?

the answer: hendry is convinced that the cubs' problems this year were a direct result of injuries and injuries alone. he is prepared to bring back 7 of 8 positional starters next season (and more than likely prepared to allow dusty to start neifi at second a minimum of 100 times). although i could see him overpaying for soriano, who, when allowed to swing as he likes with clines returning as the batting coach, will have a large dip in OPS.

expect no major changes, i'm afraid. hendry is married to this team: if it fails, he will perceive his philosophy as one of failure. he's not ready to do that yet.

That's exactly why I fear the nothing. It would be just another signal that Hendry really does believe that the problems with the team are injury-related and that a tweak or two is all that's needed.

I so agree. Damn injures have killed the Cubs, not.
