That's right ladies and gentlemen! Miller Park Sausage Races will now include an extra sausage, the Chorizo!

The newspaper reports that the newest racer, who will don a sombrero and wear red, green and white, will be introduced on Thursday at a press conference at the Brewers' park. Apparently, Latino community leaders had lobbied the Brewers and Klement's to add a Mexican mascot, the newspaper reports, and the announcement is timed to coincide with Cerveceros Day, set for Saturday night at Miller Park.

Let the spicy puns begin.

listening to conservative talk radio yesterday (for a good laugh, obviously) when they started talking about this.

you would be surprised at how many idiots called up saying that the proposal was "politically correct pandering", not that they even know what that means, they were either parroting words that the host used or just putting words together.

here's a word for y'all: xenophobia.

If they put a specific kind of "latino sausage" in there just to appease latino fans who wanted/were complaining about some sort of sausage representation, then yes, that would be stupid and I would call it "politically correct pandering."

However, allow me to add that I think the idea is hillarious. I mean, have you seen the thing? It's awesome. And Chorizo's ridiculous sombrero is anything but politically correct.

LOL, "latino sausage"

Gotta admit, the Brewers have something with that stupid sausage race. How else can a franchise from a small midwestern town make a mark?

it's symbolic. while we have no problem with old, european-immigrant, white sausages, we have a problem with a new, central american-immigrant, dark sausage.

it's okay though, because we put a sombrero on the sausage and watch it runs around like a crazy sausage and it humors us.

as long as the sausage is a benign stereotype-sausage coceived of by white people, we find it funny and harmless.

just don't suggest that mexican sausages are infiltrating the psuedo-sausage culture of old, white america. because, in the end, it's all about preserving our white sausage culture. sorry chorizo, you're a sausage too late, you should have been here 100 years ago, then you'd have been welcomed into our sausage culture--------perhaps.

I just don't like the way they taste. But I suppose that makes me an evil American bigot.

It's called marketing to a large group of consumers. It would be stupid not to, and it's stupid to bring politics into this topic.

True Story: After tonight's sausage race the Chorizo will not be seen until 2007.

Rumor is he is being deported until he gets a green card.

Well, I didn't know the other sausages were also stereotype-laden. I honestly think the race is stupid.

I didn't know you were so sensitive to hispanic foods -- I don't know what the heck a "chorizo" is.

And speaking of being here 100 years ago, where is the Japanese crowd? They play baseball too? Perhaps some sort of stereotyped samurai tofu dog is in the works? I'm down.

Personally, chorizo is one of my favorite kinds of sausage. I like it about as much as good Italian sausage and better than most other types. Brown sugar and cumin are usually in it, plus it typically renders enough fat to make cooking with other foods easy (and delicious).

It goes really well with spinach and makes for really tasty tacos/enchiladas, imo.
