Cubs.com[/url]"] Cedeno may get some rest: Manager Dusty Baker said that he may start giving the struggling Ronny Cedeno a couple of days off here and there to get him back to where he was earlier this year. Cedeno, who started the season red-hot and in the month of June batted over .300, has gone 5-for-49 in his last 15 games to drop his average to a season-low .248.

"Ronny's fouling off pitches that he usually puts into play," said Baker. "He needs to stay on top of the ball and come through solid. But he's fouling off balls sometimes where he is on top. Very rarely do you find that."

Baker had what he described as a "school-like session" with the 23-year-old shortstop.

"We discussed various topics about his approach and his patience at the plate," he said. "He may need some time to rest, but we haven't reached that point yet."

He needs some time out of the lineup at this point, he's pretty much flailing away up there. He probably needs to visit Iowa and Von Joshua. Too bad he can't do that at the MLB level.

Sad thing Perez is hitting better than Ronny in about every category but OBP as far as I'm looking on the Cubs site.

Sad oh sad.

Well Theriot is finally with the big club again....but what are the chances?

With Dusty and his pet fetish already on the team......

less then 5% chance of Theriot playing more then a game a week.

Walker is probably playing everyday for the rest of the month in hopes he improves his trade value. Playing Neifi at SS everyday while Cedeno sits is a given.

I agree with Dusty on this one. Also Dusty has given Cedeno a real long rope this year. Kind of a surprise. I hope it is Theriot who gets most of the time. This would be my second surprise that Dusty has done this year though.

Sitting Cedano should be a good thing. It worked for Murton and he has done well since his 'sitting'. Hopefully Cedano uses the time off and gets it back together. Playing the younger guys like Murton and Cedano takes some time for them to adjust. Not many players are like Abert P. from the Cards, were he just fits in easily.

Both players still look like keepers over the long term.

Dusty makes a mention of plate discipline and nobody cares...but there are still a half-dozen sarcastic insults at him :). Nothing like pre-defined responses.

Dusty is right on this one.

Dusty has made two intelligent moves in the last 12 hours - pulling Dempster in the 9th when it was clear he could not get anyone out, and giving Ronny a day or two off to get himself together a bit. Too bad he doesn't act this way consistently.

I agree with you. I've beaten up on Dusty all season and was utterly shocked that the two words "plate discipline" came out of his mouth. I'll give him credit for this move. However, I want him to mention "plate discipline" to the whole team and not just Cedeno.

Saying plate discipline doesn't mean a thing. Making mentions of things isn't what matters. People have been talking about this problem for 4 years and he just now mentions the words and we're supposed to get all giddy? Dusty's track record is set as far as patience at the plate is concerned. He would have to undergo a drastic change to make a difference for the better.

Saying you are going to talk to somebody about plate discipline isn't the same as actually making a hitter better.

Who said anything about getting giddy? I give him credit for even forming the two words "plate discipline" to Cedeno. I was thinking he was going to just say his standard old "He's not swinging the bat well" statement, which would just mean that he needs to get hits vs. changing approach.

Please forgive us if Dusty's track record makes us skeptical that he actually gives a crap about plate discipline.

Giddy was just my sarcastic response to somebody pointing out that nobody is talking about Dusty saying the words, instead just maintaining their previous perception of him. I don't give him credit for saying the words. Because he's said stuff like "we need to give up fewer walks" before and nothing has been done about it. He's also talked about fundamentals, hustling, and winning, and nothing has come of it. Actions speak louder than words, and Dusty's actions put a damper on any plate discipline talk. Not to mention, his years of non-discipline words make it even more difficult to get excited about this.

i'd be more surprised if he said it about somebody who he wasn't trying to rationalize benching. this is the guy that limited cedeno's PT because his throws tailed funny. i'm not so sure he wouldn't say anything to get neifster out there.
