"I kind of wore down quick,'' Hill said. "I came out and threw everything at them almost in the first inning.''

Sounds like the start of a relief pitcher in the making to me....

i would say that 1,100 of your 1,200 posts have been about hill becoming a relief pitcher.

And I'd say that your last 1000 posts have all been touting Rich Hill as a ML Starter. So what? We have varying opinons on this thread. I'd love to eat crow if I'm wrong...

From Carrie Muskat's mailbag:

Why not let Rich Hill stick in the rotation for the rest of the year? There's not much room for improvement at the Triple-A level, and even though teams cite fears of destroying a pitcher's confidence by letting them struggle at the Major League level, I can't imagine that it does anything for Hill's confidence to dominate at Iowa for a month, then struggle in Chicago for a week or two. He'll never figure out Major League hitters by dominating Triple-A hitters.

Hill needs to give the Cubs a reason to keep him in the rotation the rest of the year. As manager Dusty Baker has said, you have to graduate sometime.

That might be the dumbest thing coming from the Cubs' organization yet this year, and that's saying something.

I personally have zero faith in Hill as a starter, but Christ, let him pitch at this point! The season is beyond gone, and how is he going to "graduate" if you don't give him a stretch of starts to see what he can do? GAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!

so is hill out of the rotation now or what?

Baker declined to name a starter for Sunday's game against St. Louis, though rookie Juan Mateo said he expects to get the call. Baker also declined to say whether Ryan O'Malley will stick in the rotation beyond his next start.

"That depends on how he does in subsequent starts," Baker said.

Complicating things is the status of rehabbing starters Wade Miller and Sean Marshall. Marshall allowed six runs in 52/3 innings Thursday for Triple-A Iowa in his second rehab start and will get at least one more. Miller will confer Saturday with Baker and pitching coach Larry Rothschild to determine whether he needs another rehab start.

if o'malley gets starts at hill's expense, i may quit the cubs.

I'd guess Marmol or Mateo would get bumped before Hill at this point.

neither miller nor o'malley have any business getting starts right now for the cubs.

O'Malley might show a little something and be valuable for a trade.

Miller might show he has some gas left in the tank and could be had next year on the cheap as a starter or for bullpen work.

I can't imagine O'Malley getting more than 3 starts...he's probably gone as soon as Marshall is ready to go. Miller cost a bit of cash, so why not see if any of it can pay off? If he takes up slot, you've got Z taking another...I'd give the other 3 to Hill, Guzman and Marshall. Send Mateo and Marmol back down to get some work. They're too raw at this point.

Why is Hill more deserving than O'Malley? Aside from the K's, their numbers are actually quite comparable, and they're the same age.

Talent.

What were you saying about making up statistics?

Identical WHIP, O'Malley has a slight edge with ERA, HR/9, etc. All of their non-K numbers are similar.

O'Malley has been consistently mediocre his entire career. Hill went from bad to ridiculously good. Using career minor league numbers for a player who had such a dramatic turnaround as Hill did is going to be skewed. And even then, the fact that Hill has TWICE as many K's as O'Malley is extremely significant.

Compare their 2006 seasons and get back to me.

So there's no possibility that O'Malley can be a serviceable pitcher?

basically, yes.

That's nonsense.

so one game against a terrible offense negates about 6 years of games in the minors and college with okay-at-best stats?

Does O'Malley remind anyone of John Koronka?

He doesn't throw as hard as John.

But I think he'll have a similar career (some success from time to time) to John, with quite a few chances at the big league level.
