Am I the only one who thinks Dontrelle is very overrated?

No, I said the same thing many times. He's young, lefty, and had some success, but I think he will start showing over the years that he's nothing too special.

He's most certainly overrated, but I wouldn't say "very". He was pretty good in 2003, and had a great year last year. The even numbered years seem to be giving him problems.

Mizzou I'm with ya ... and that's a VERY steep price for the D-train. If I were Walt I woulnd't do that deal as it stands. I've been impressed by Reyes so far - he looks like the real deal.

I don't think he is "overrated" per sey, he started off miserable this year and has rebounded. He is a very good athlete and a very good pitcher. All the same, giving up that much talent would worry me if I were a Cardinal fan.

I don't know why the Cards or the Marlins would do this deal. Maybe the Jockerty thinks the Cards window of opportunity is about to close, I don't know.

yeah, it's definitely the year on the calendar that affects him. Like Farnsworth. "Well huh, looks like an even numbered year so I guess I"ll suck it up"

I know why the Fish would do this deal. (see the prospect list above)

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of the deal right now.

I am. I'd love to see the Cards give up a ton and end up paying Willis post arbitration money based on win totals and hype.

Exactamundo.

If any team is going to gut their farm to get Willis, let's hope it's the Cards.

Willis has several comps that peaked before age 25 -- Steve Avery, Ismael Valdez, Jim Abbott, Mark Mulder (it seems like he's peaked). Is Buehrle poised to join the list?

The Cards need young arms on their staff, it wouldn't hurt to give up Duncan who has overachieved, Reyes who projects to be middle of the rotation, and an A level prospect.

I'm a D-Train fan and while, yes, he is probably overhyped to a degree, I do think he's the genuine article.

I'm not sure what to think about this trade for the Cardinals. They've had some success trading prospects for veterans, trading Adam Kennedy along with Kent Bottenfield for Jim Edmonds (highway robbery) and cashing in on a half-season of Bud Smith (along with Placido Polanco and Mike Timlin) to get Scott Rolen; on the other hand, the Mark Mulder deal ain't looking so hot.

So while I'm not sure I want to see the Cardinals get Dontrelle, I can certainly see this deal backfiring on them. I will give Walt Jocketty this, a deal like this would certainly prove the man has balls.

I've always been under the impression Reyes projected as a #1 or 2

When the Cards traded for Mulder, I said that Haren would be as good as Mulder at a fraction of the cost. I'll say the same thing now with one caveat...Reyes is an injury risk based on his history.

However, I think he'll be a better pitcher than Willis if he stays healthy.

I think his top end projection is a #2.

If Willis' career track follows with those comps' careers, then Reyes for Willis alone will be a bad deal for the Cards.
