Here are a couple of key points on the trade market that can benefit us.

1. Morgan Ensberg is on the outs in Houston since the Huff trade.

2. Pat Burrell is on the outs in Philly.

Now, I'm not so stupid as to think we could get a guy like Burrell for a guy like Hill. There's PR to take into account, and the Phillies need back a good MLB guy. The same is especially true of Ensberg in Houston.

I'd propose we give up Juan Pierre and a B level prospect (Marmol, Dopirak, Moore?) for Ensberg. It would solve Houston's CF problem and give them another piece... so I think that might be able to get it done.

Over in Philly, I say we trade them Aramis for either Burrell and plenty of cash... or for Abreu and a bit of cash. Gillick has been trying to unload both of them, and this is such a huge upgrade at 3B I imagine it'd be an acceptible trade.

Anybody else think this is a decent idea? It'd set up our OF next season (Burrell, Pie, Jones or Jones, Pie, Abreu) and we would basically be swapping Aramis for Ensberg. I don't know which player you would prefer, but the difference between them is negligible compared to the difference between our OF and what would be the new one.

I think the Astros are more apt to get rid of Lane than they are to dump Ensberg.

I consider Marmol more than a "B level prospect" after seeing him this year. I think he is part of the 2007 rotation or perhaps will be groomed as a closer.

OF is way easier to fill than 3B, so no way on Aram for Burrell

How about ARam for Abreu?

The theory behind these deals seems to be the Cubs would replace Aramis with Ensberg. The problem is there's no way they are getting Ensberg. I see Abreu and Ramirez being similar hitters for the next couple years, so this is just a lateral move, because they'd have to replace Ramirez's bat at third, which would be very hard. I don't get the point unless you've got a brilliant follow-up involving ARod.

So you'll trade a player who's much younger and in his prime for a guy who's older, and who's skills are in decline?

That's a terrible idea.

I would take Aramis barely but just because he's 28 and Abreu is 32 so ARam is less likely to have a big decline over the next couple years. Although he did have a big decline this year so who knows.

Did anyone see that thing they did on ESPN about Abreu and the HR derby? Since he won the HR derby his HR numbers have plummetted.

What kind of market is there for Burrell? He's got a big salary and has had some ups and downs. If Hendry was willing to pay Burrell's remaining salary I doubt he'd cost too much.

I was looking at the trade from an OBP perspective. Of course age is a factor...probably a big factor.

Is Pierre better than Tavares? Not by much if he is. So, Houston trades Ensberg for a Tavares clone that makes 15x more than Tavares does, and some B level prospect that "might" be a major leaguer someday?

I don't see it.
