The Mets are the only team 10 games or more above .500 and they are by no means a stellar ball club.

The sad thing is that as pitiful as the cubs have been, they are only around 12 games out of the wild card.

It's entirely possible for management to think that they can make a run and get back into the race.

I predict a team makes a trade that helps them storm into and through the playoffs in the NL. I have no idea what team it will be and what player/s will be involved, but I think it's going to happen.

Really going out on a limb there aren't you? Considering the Mets are seemingly the only lock to make the playoffs, I would say there is a very good chance this will happen.

I predict that somebody from either the AL or NL will win the World Series.

Eh, in previous years teams have done a pretty good job of backing their way into the playoffs, especially in the NL West. When was the last big trade that made a difference in the NL; the Beltran to the Astros deal?

If the trade market is dead, the NL is going to be absolutely anemic. At the rate things are going, none of these teams seem capable of putting together a 10 game winning streak. The Mutts are the only team that's been able to run away and hide with their division. Everyone else is just so terrible that a crazy blockbuster would tip the scales in a team's favor and let them make a run at the World Series. I mean, honestly, last year's Cardinals and Astros would wipe the floor with everyone in the NL Central this year.

It really gets me annoyed because if this team wasn't one of the worst in team history, they'd probably be in the thick of the division race right now.

You comfortable with a rotation of Pedro, Glavine, Trachsel, Duke and a rookie not Liriano or a Tiger?

Maybe if it were 1996.

Their pitching staff has the 2nd best ERA in the NL. Yeah....... I'd be pretty comfortable with that.

Do I think that they're as good as the top AL teams? Probably not, but they could probably hold their own in a 7-game series. Seriously though....... to say that they're not "stellar" is quite a stretch.

The Mets pitching staff is very good...close to excellent. They are not stellar. Of course, if you compare them to the Cubs staff, then they are stellar.

A lot of that era is froma bullpen that is stellar. Of their top 4 starters, Trachsel is the youngest. Could make for a disaster in a playoff series.

Actually, Pedro is a year younger than Trachsel at 34.

I'm incredibly curious about Pelfrey, who they just called up. He was probably the top pitching prospect in the minors who had never seen the majors after Billingsley made it to the show.

Not sure if this was you, and tell me if it was, but somebody else said something like this in another thread and I couldn't agree more. Only 2 teams (Cubs, Pirates) are more than 10 games out of a playoff spot in the NL vs 5 in the AL. Look at the wild card standings as well. Only 3 teams within 9 games of the wild card leader (White Sox) in the AL. Only 2 NL teams are more than 9 games out of the wild card leader in the NL. I'm sure you can guess those two teams.

This is what hurts the most.... :(

I think I'm going to shoot myself on July 10 because I'll be forced to put up with the Cubs, and only the Cubs, until football starts. Somebody save me. Please.
July 10 has come and gone, and you're still here. :D

Yeah. Kinda like 2003, where the Cubs were around .500 then made their run. I don't think I'm gonna watch the N.L. playoffs at all this year. Especially if Houston and St. Louis are in it again. That would annoy me a lot.

I now have two more days. When I wrote the original I didn't know that July 10 was the beginning of the All Star Break.

Homer > Pelfrey.
