Much, much earlier in this crap season, when the ship was first sinking, Stone said that Baker had already been extended, and the Cubs were just looking for the right time to announce. This would make sense if Hendry just rewarded Dusty in the fashion that he was by MacPhail. It also makes sense that Hendry would continue to talk up Dusty in the media at every turn, as if he's waiting for the avalanche to turn around and head right back up the mountainside.

I wonder about this more and more these days. Not many managers have ever been hung on to through a stretch like this, and I fear that Steve may know something. Alternatively, its possible that Hendry just can't admit he'd made a mistake and he'll keep Dusty forever.

I'm still scared stupid by this possibility, and it gains momentum every day.

The Cubs' record is 29-51. If they're giving Baker a contract extension, what exactly does that say about management's aspirations? Do as bad a job as possible, keep your job. Fantastic.

It's not that they're giving him one...it's that they've already given him one and have been waiting for the right time to announce it.

If they want to see a revolt and one of the worst PR moves of all time, go ahead an announce that extension. Otherwise lets just get this over with, please!

They're going to be waiting a long time, considering how badly the team sucks.

Dusty Baker will be here until he dies...

They have already signed him for 100 years, with incentives.

Shoot they probably already have his funeral laid out...

Maybe that's the master plan, to lose as many fans as possible by the end of the season so that nobody complains when the extension is announced. If so it's working very well, that White Sox bandwagon just keeps growing and growing.

VERY well said.

At this point, there is no way Baker can come back.

If he's been extended and they now want to get rid of him, they'll have to buy him out.

This potentially could be really really really ugly.

Steve also said that the Cubs were about to resign Maddux. Hendry doesn't want to fire Dusty cause it makes him look bad. Dusty will make it through the year and then Hendry will say the Cubs are going to go in a different direction.

Talk on the Score today was that Maddux could be a Dodger by Aug. 1. Who knows, but I'm sure he wishes it was August already!

I've felt that way too for awhile now that they've already signed him and have just been waiting for a hot streak to announce it. The cool thing is that with this team that hot streak will never arrive. What a dilemma for Hendry! :)

theyll win 2 in a row, and Hendry wilkl be like

"Well now that the Cubs are playing better" (whole crowd Groans)

"We would like to anounce that Dusty Baker has recieved a 21 year extension" "Were very glad to anounce this" (by this time all of the reporters have left and there are just papers floating in the air about to fall)

Dusty Begins with toothpick in mouth:

"Id like to thankyou for this, (5 sec. pause, toothpick change) great opportunty, cant wait to start, hopefully we can get more black players because they take the heat better"

Hendry walks in with another paper

"We have just signed Glendon Rusch to a 7 year extension..."

Really what would the Cubs need to do this season for a Dusty extension to look good to the fans. The only way possible is for the team to actually get into some kind of playoff chase, I dont mean within 10 games, I mean a legitimate shot in Sept.

Personnally I take anything that the Cubs do for the rest of the season like I am taking Slappys recent upturn TOO LITTLE TOO LATE If Dusty somehow has a job with the Cubs next year I will not watch at all.

HEY, JIM HENDRY. Yeah, you. Grow a set of testicles and just fire Dusty already. I'm sick and tired of the stupid power trip that you're on. It is so unbelievably aggravating, you have no idea. Virtually every informed Cub fan on the planet knows that Dusty needs to go. JUST DO IT ALREADY YOU FAT IDIOT.

I wish it was August already. One month closer to the disaster we call a baseball season and one month closer to the start of college football.

I just hope we cut the fat from this team at the deadline. This would include a few players:

Jones (actually somehow a good trading piece)

Pierre (who the hell cares anymore, read: cheese sandwich)

Nevin (STOP TAKING TIME FROM MURTON)

Aramis? (questionable)

Dusty (like he's worth anything)

Glendon (it doesn't matter how bad he is, HE THROWS LEFTY! OMG!)

Maddux (worst SP we have, hands down)

Send these guys out and we'll get some prospects and start over next year. Please do this, because I'm a better GM than Hendry and I know what's best.

I, for one, fully believe that Stony is full of it, when it comes to contract status. My guess is...there was AN OFFER ON THE TABLE, but due to the crappiness the Cubs have shown, Hendry had to pull the offer off the table, until the storm calm down. And since the storm hasn't calm down, my guess is...any extension Baker may have gotten, is no longer an option.

My guess with his "recent managerial contreversies" (falling asleep in the dugout, not arguing a close call, etc, etc) Baker is resign to the fact, that his tenure is nearly over in Chicago.

My guess is....Baker doesn't managed this team, when the 2nd half (OH GAWD, there's still another half...puke) begins.

The key word you used is "informed." That rules Hendry out.

Sell high. His value may never be higher than right now.

Pierre (who the hell cares anymore, read: cheese sandwich)

He's hitting a little better now, too. Sell high, though you won't get much with his impending free agency.

Nevin (STOP TAKING TIME FROM MURTON)

DFA'd by August 1 if there are no takers.

Aramis? (questionable)

Nope. I'd keep him.

Dusty (like he's worth anything)

A goner. Wish it was sooner rather than later.

Glendon (it doesn't matter how bad he is, HE THROWS LEFTY! OMG!)

Trade him for anything. ANYTHING!

Maddux (worst SP we have, hands down)

Give the poor guy a shot with a contender. Please.

Can't do any worse.
