Trade proposal - Ramirez for Abreu

Both players appear to be stuck in a rut with their current team and could benefit from a change of scenery.

Maybe the Cubs could throw in Hill or a young reliever if the Phillies felt they needed more out of the deal.

My whole thought process on this is that I feel Ramirez has regressed to where he was at the end of his tenure with the Pirates (non chalant, lazy play). Ramirez is a guy that needs a manager who is always riding him to ensure that his effort stays high. Obviously, Baker is not that guy. Plus, Abreu gets on base at a much greater clip than Ramirez.

What's everyone else think?

27 yr old 3rd baseman who plays to the level of the talent around him (can be both good and bad) for a 32 yr old OF, nearing the end of his prime. Yeah...let's do it.

NOT.

No thank you.

If the Cubs trade Ramirez, Neifi will start at 3B every single day for the rest of Dusty's contract....now do you really want that to happen?

Oh my god, no. I never had considered the repercussions of how this could get Neifi in the lineup even more. Can I go back in time 10 minutes and rescind this trade proposal?

What if it was Ramirez for Burrell?

That would be great but just wondering who replaces ARam. I would think a lineup of ARam and C. Lee would be better than Burrell and whomever else would be signed as FA. Unless, of course, we were to trade for a talented rookie or some other high-caliber 3B.

For what it's worth, I think the Phils will be looking for a 3B and obviously, pitching for Abreu. The only way I see the Cubs getting Abreu is thru a 3-way deal.

I'm not sure if they'll be looking for pitching or not. Myers and Hamels are a good base, they'll have both Wolf and Lieber returning, Floyd in AAA, plus guys like Segovia and Haigwood in AA. They're rather thin on offensive prospects IMO so they may hold on to what they've got for the time being and hope for the return of the vets plus the a boost from the youngsters to get them where they're going.

Abreu's best days are behind him, I wouldn't do it.

Right on.

His days are still pretty good though. I wouldn't think about doing it for Ramirez (because ARam is younger and likely further from free agency), but I would definitely go after Abreu if he is available.

Ramirez, Hill and other prospect for Burrell and Utley. Move Utley to third, problem solved. Though, better chance of the Pope getting married than there is of the Phillies trading Utley at this point.

Well with the way things have gone with the church lately, does it have to be a straight marriage? On a serious note though I can't see the Phils parting with either Utley or Howard for anything.

They don't need offensive prospects when they have control of Utley, Howard, Rollins, Burrell, Victorino, and I'm assuming a 3B in a trade for the foreseeable future. Myers, Hamels and Floyd is a decent start. But Lieber is not very good, healthy, or consistent anymore and Wolf is a HUGE questionmark at this point. If Lieber gives them anything when he comes back, he's likely to be traded also.

Gillick would have to be insane to do that deal. Utley is going to be a star for 10 more years.

I'd only trade Ramirez for Abreu or Burrell if it was clear that Ramirez was going to opt out of his contract and become a free agent after this year. With the way he's been playing I don't think that will happen though.

Then Philly wouldn't do the deal.

Maybe Abreu isn't the guy to seek in a trade involving Ramirez, but I'm sick of watching Ramirez put forth a half-ass effort (like today when he was jogging on the way to first on the ball off the wall).

Changes need to be made on this ballclub and I'd start with the guys not putting forth effort. Time and time again, Ramirez is that guy. Down the road, with a manager that stays on his butt all of the time, he's going to be an all-star again. But that ain't going to happen with Dusty and his hands off approach.
