Ok so Derrek says the team's play is terrible and that they need to come to play. Am I wrong in thinking that this is the job of the manager. Shouldn't a manager at least be held accountable for his team coming to the park ready to play their games. If a team consistently shows up with a lack of heart and is clearly there to play just because they have to, then that should be a bad reflection on the management team. I found myself rooting for Carlos Lee and Prince Fielder tonight because both are on my fantasy team. Needless to say I had a good night, but as a Cubs fan I can't believe I am actually rooting for my fantasy players over my own team.

I'm disgusted with this organization and we need a clean house top to bottom.

Showing up

Derrek Lee accused the Cubs of "not showing up" in Sunday's 8-1 loss at Minnesota, which featured several poor defensive plays.

"Obviously, we're not in a good situation," Lee said. "Our goal right now is day-by-day to win games, concentrate on playing good baseball, playing hard every single day, concentrate and focus for nine innings every day.

"I don't think we showed up [sunday]. We understand we have to do a better job than that. Sometimes you lose, but you need to show up every day."

Manager Dusty Baker disagreed that the Cubs didn't show up at all.

"We didn't show up defensively," he said. "We didn't play well at all. It started in the first inning. We made a lot of mistakes. When you don't catch balls, it's magnified, especially when you're not hitting."

ok dust for brains, if you didnt show up defensively, hitting and pitching, what do you have left?

these guys are a corpse, not even D Lee can help these guys. Where's Hendry on this board? He ought to defend himself...D Lee shouldn't have to come out and say this stuff. Wow

So what would it take for Dusty to call his own team out? I know he's a "player's manager" and doesn't believe in holding any player accountable for anything, publicly at least, but clearly he has to see this private admonishing of players isn't working for him.

Now a player one game back from an injury is calling out the team, but Busty is still chomping on his toothpick? Dusty makes me sick.

HEY EVERY ONE ONE MORE INJURY TO PASS ON!...

derrek lee needs to keep his mouth shut and focus on the game.

Ya just ignore it, the problem will fix itself  Lee is the super star on this team, he's the one that needs to stand up and fight the horrible play thus far. I think it was smart of him to keep quiet while he was out, but now that he's back playing at a pretty good level considering the amount of time he's missed he's got every right to voice his opinion. If Pierre came out and said this I'd have a problem with it, Lee was the right person to do this.

Agreed. Seeing as the Cubs team "went dead" when Lee was lost for 2 months, it's only fair Lee should call out the team.

I don't have time to find it right now, but wasn't there a quote in every Chicago paper recently in which Dusty defended himself as a winner. Something about his track record proved that if he had the horses, he'd win. I took that to mean Dusty doesn't think his players are very good.

i agree. if anyone on the cubs starts showing any leadership, they might actually start winning games and screw up the draft next year. keep quiet lee and let baker keep the excuses flowing! hopefully he is well on his way to seattle (or anywhere else but chicago).

Unless Derrek is given the power to make personnel decisions and fill out the lineup card, all he can do is play his best every day. Too bad that won't amount to crap

One of the surest ways to expose yourself as a loser is to call yourself a winner. You either are or you aren't; you can't give yourself a winner label.

Technically, he didn't call himself a winner, but it still sounds to me like he's throwing his team into the fire.

"It's a little disheartening how some people forget,'' Baker said. "Or the fact I haven't had my team. Jim hasn't changed his mind. He knows what I can do. If I've got the horses, I'm going to win.

"You can count on it. It's been my record, ain't it? I didn't lose all I know overnight. Give me the horses -- and my horses stay healthy -- and I'll win. If people want to blame me for everything that's happened this year, I'm a powerful man. More powerful than I know. The last two years, I haven't had the team we had on paper.''

Baker noted that he has plenty of support around major-league baseball from people who respect his talent as a manager.

"There's a lot of people around that still think I'm pretty good,'' he said. "I realized it was a tough job when I came here. These four years aren't going to erase my last 34. It won't happen.''

Even though he appears to be running out of time to win, Baker made sure to say that Lee's return might not be an instant cure-all.

"It might take a while for D-Lee to get back to being D-Lee, so who knows?'' he said. "I'm not worried about it because worry does no good. I know what I can do.

"My track record speaks for itself. It's not like I just started yesterday. I don't always feel like my job is at stake, but I always feel I've got to win in every job I've had. And we're going to win.''

Heck with the horses. Give me that $4million salary. For just one year. :P

No, they'd probably just DFA him and let Theriot come sit on the bench.
