This season is done. This team is going nowhere and we need an expert to evaluate the team and decide who stays and who goes. I think that Hendry should fire Dusty today and come down from the ivory tower and become the manager.

PROS: Hendry has experience coaching in college and in the minors. Hendry knows everything possible about player development-he drafted Bobby Hill didn't he. The Cubs don't have to pay for a new manager. Hendry knows all the players, he signed them. He finally will be visible to the fans and not secluded in the bunker. He has time on his hands-the draft is completed and the phone isn't ringing off the hook for Neifi or Wood.

CONS: Hendry will be able to see first hand what he has done to this team. He will see the lack of fundamentals and motivation for his players and can't blame the front office. He will have to face the media daily and may be asked a tough question or two.

It makes the most sense. That's why they won't do it.

Then who will GM?

There's no reason he can't do both for the next 3 months. He's got plenty of assistants in the front office area, as well as Andy. He could have coaches run the day to day on field operations.

I wouldn't be surprised if Gary Hughes would be named interim GM if Hendry became manager. I don't see it happening, however.

I don't get it. Do we have one now?

Apparently not. Hendry was too busy(doing what?)to be in Minnesota and watch his 18 games below .500 team get swept by the Twinkies. Maybe Chuckie Cheese had some special week-end buffet he couldn't pass up. But MacPhail was there in the Twins box being chummy with Tom Kelly and GM Terry Ryan.

If he can't see the lack of fundamentals, then I REALLY don't want him in the dugout. Or in the front office. Or having ANYTHING to do with a baseball team.

Two more years. 10 more second basemen.

MacPhail is juicing his contacts hoping to lineup a job this offseason because he knows he's on his way out.

The speculation is that MacPhail is in line to take over for Selig as Commish in 18 months.

I think Steve Stone said that MacPhail is doing exactly what the Tribune company wants him to do, and that's why he'll be the Cubs' President for quite a while longer. Gee, I hope Stoney's wrong this time around.
