Guys, don't lie and say you don't enjoy a Jay Mariotti article when the Cubs drop eight straight.

Re: Mariotti

Anyone who repeatedly points out how awful Dusty Baker is and starts fights with Hawk Harrelson can't be all THAT bad. Mariotti is who Chicago sports fans run to in times of crisis, because since he's perpetually bashing everyone in town, you can go "finally! someone who gets it!"

Yeah, but he bashes absolutely EVERYONE, even if it means double-speaking constantly. He's written so many articles where he'll completely counter an argument he made earlier.

Back in the early 90's he did this all the time in terms of Jordan and the Bulls. This is when it became obnoxiously apparent that he just flip flops his argument.

The guy sells papers. He must be doing something right??

Apparently not enough considering they're the number two paper in town.

I'm pretty certain that if he was gone tomorrow, they'd sell just as many papers as they currently do.

The Sun-Times is technically the "number two paper in town" however, it's sports section has been held in higher regard (than the Tribune's) for years. In fact, the Sun-Times is synonymous with sports in many circles and it's circulation is greater than the Trib's at the newsstand.

Regardless, selling papers doesn't mean you are a good writer. It means you are willing to pander to the lowest common denominator that draws the most traffic. He's a good attention whore, but that's about it.

True. I agree in terms of the sports page especially in terms of Illinois high school sports coverage.

But like you said it has a greater circulation newstand wise. Tribune has a stronger distribution subscpition wise. One major reason the Sun-Times sells more newsstand wise is due to format. The tabloid style is easier to read on the daily commute.

Whether or not someone is a "good" writer is highly subjective. The point about paper sells, in this instance, is relevant as it relates to sports. My response has nothing to do with a support for (or against) Mariotti but it's naive to think that he isn't one of the main reasons why the Sun-Times outsells the Tribune on newstands. As pointed out earlier, the Sun-Times sports section is more well respected than the Tribune's; it has been so unbalanced that the Tribune actually has commercials featuring only their sports section (to generate interest). BTW, I think the Sun-Times relishes in Mariotti's "whore" like ways because ultimately, it gives them more publicity.

Just so you know, I wasn't arguing the Sun-Times is bettter than the Trib overall (I'm a Tribune subscriber).

I didn't think you were arguing in favor of either, but rather assessing sales and reasoning for sales.

Did Ozzie succeed in running Mariotti out of town by calling him a ---?

Teddy Greenstein in the Trib[/url]"]

Mariotti, meanwhile, remains "on vacation." His last column ran June 26, six days after White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen used a derogatory term to describe him and the same day he appeared on "Chicago Tonight" and criticized the Sun-Times for not protecting him from supposed threats emanating from the Sox.

Mariotti has continued to appear on ESPN's "Around the Horn" during his vacation, which, Sun-Times editor in chief John Barron told the Reader, will continue for "weeks and weeks and weeks."

The column is about how Steve Dahl's son was a co-founder of an anti-Mariotti website.

My understanding is that Jay is on an "eight week time out". I dont' think this would have happened had he not lashed out at his employer on TV. Who knows...he may never be back.

Let's certainly hope so.

Mariotti had every right to rip his editors for not backing him up. For them to possibly have put him on an extended leave for calling that out is really, really wrong. Whatever his personal and professional flaws (and he has tons of professional ones), he deserved to have the backing of his editors when it comes to a manager of a professional team using hateful slurs to deride him.

agreed. I never liked Marriotti much, but he is right this time in a huge way.

Which makes me wonder if there's more to this suspension than we know.

About the only thing I can think of is that he may have had it out with his editors about them not backing him, and crossed the line with his boss. Even that seems odd, though. He's been there long enough to where he should have some latitude, and then there's the matter of him being dead on correct on the paper's response.

So yeah, there has to be some other reason than the TV thing.

On the verbal diarrhea fest know as "Around the Horn", Marriotti still has a Sun-Times background behind him. Not that means much, but its at least a sign of some civility.

 I noticed that too, although it probably doesn't mean anything.
