I refuse to acknowledge Mariotti, even if I actually agree with what he has to say. Personally, I wish more would do the same.

I can't stand the guy either, but that article is pretty much on the money. They probably will make Dusty the scapegoat, but MacPhail and Hendry also need to go.

But like Bruce says in his article today, there's no indication that Hendry will not let Baker manage with a fully healthy roster, and since it doesn't look like Lee will be back till July, I'm not holding my breath on anything happening soon.

He might have something of value to say, but his writing is terrible.

He uses stupid little pet names that make him seem petty and really kind of catty.

Mariotti is such a tool.

I'm pretty darn sure the Cubs stated he would be back in June somewhere along the line. Though I can't prove it because there are apparently thousands of non-baseball Derek Lees who come up in Google news and it would be buried far in the past.

Oh well. It wouldn't be suprising if the Cubs underestimated another player's return schedule from injury.

Plus isn't Lee complaining that his wrist won't loosen up? That's not a good sign.

Yep...that's the right link.

There continues to be every indication that general manager Jim Hendry will allow Baker to manage with his full complement of players, including first baseman Derrek Lee, who may remain on the disabled list until July because of two broken bones near his right wrist.

Marrioti is almost always right about the Cubs, especially lately. He's preaching to this NSBB choir.

That's because what was seen as a pessimistic view has come to fruition.

Let Baker manage the rest of the year with healthy players. If they did fire him, they would not make a playoff run. Give him every opportunity to hang himself with no excuses.

If he's fired now though, perhaps guys like Murton would get to play every day instead of being platooned with a Freddie Bynum. Or maybe they would actually pitch some young guy instead of Rusch the rest of the year. Baker can do more damage to this team, even when they're losing, by continuing to put young guys in positions to fail.

Exactly. I wish I could find the date of the Clines qoute about Murton needing to be more aggressive and compare his pitches seen/PA. I bet there would almost be a direct corelation to that date and Muton's OBP slide.

How is Murton supposed to get better at hitting right handed pitchers if he never sess them? Again, it's one thing to platoon a vet in the twilight of his career who is used to this type of thing, and quite another to a young player who is used to playing every day. Anyone want to look up Murton's # vs. righties in the minors?

bob brenly sucks, managers don't win titles, they only lose them--organizations win titles, managers can be on a winning team if they simply get the hell out of the way, conform to organizational philosophy, and focus on getting along with the media.

in our case, organizational philosophy is: "be aggressive at the plate."

that seems to be all.

i'm talking about baseball. basketball is completely different, in basketball, one player can win a title. baseball, though not really a team sport, cannot be won with one player.

it can be won with 2 players though, preferably pitchers-which is the whole reason that brenly has that big ring he's always showing off.

It applies to basketball too----all sports really except individual ones like Tennis or Golf. It's just that Krause was an idiot and decided to take it too far, saying it's ONLY the organization, the players don't even matter, Michael Jordan deserves no credit, etc. etc.

Murton is killing us, having a worse run than Corey Patterson ever did. A .367 OPS in June - horrendous made worse by his penchant for GIDPs. Bynum, of course isn't the ultimate answer, but right now Murton doesn't look like he's worth defending either. Oh, and BTW his pitches/PA is higher this year than last when he hung up a .900+ OPS. It might be somewhat valid to pin some of this on Clines, but it doesn't seem to be the biggest reason for his problems.

How could he be killing us when the Cubs were dead long before June? Young guys who are not the elite players are going to have bad stretches, including very long stretches when they are very bad. It happens. Teams have to be willing to let kids play through those stretches and improve. It would have been nice if they were smart enough to realize the importance of letting him play more last year. But if they delay the "getting through the rough spots" time frame even more then we might go into next season not knowing what we can get from the guy.
