A mid-market manager says clubs such as the Marlins and Devil Rays have the right idea. "Under the current system, it doesn't pay to be in the middle," he says. "You should either do it like George (Steinbrenner) does or take your payroll all the way down and build with kids. That way you have a chance to get good in a hurry." . . .

hmmm....nah...Hendry isn't bold enough to do that..

One N.L. manager says the Cubs' window is just about closed. "I love (G.M.) Jim Hendry, but he got pressured into making some of those deals over there. He felt like he had to get a leadoff man, but (Juan) Pierre just isn't the same player he was a few years ago. They gave up three arms for him, but I wouldn't have given up (RHP) Ricky Nolasco for Pierre straight up." .

"One NL manager" try 85 percent of the Chicago fans believes the Cubs window is closed. Oh boy.....Hendry is definately a dunce, right now.

He got pressured? By who? Baker?? If he's getting bullied around by Baker, I'm not really confident that he'll fire him.

The window is never closed when you have a $100 million payroll.

What about when $11 million is for dead weight (Rusch, Jones, Neifi) and about $19 million is for perpetually injured pitchers (Prior, Wood)

jones is way overpaid, has major defensive issues and as a baserunner is only second to alou in ineptitude but i would hardly call him "dead weight".

Jones at 6 million is not dead weight at all, but it's the 3 years that could become problematic.

Who cares what the payroll is. With this GM and the way he overspends on mediocre players I do believe the window was closed after the 2004 season. Since then we have become worse and worse every year. Didn't we have 20-30mil to spend during the offseason? Money well spent haha.

To me, the use of the words pressured and felt in reference to the need for a table setter at the top of the lineup suggests a lack of Baseball intelligence/knowledge. Hendry, on his own, couldn't recognize what high OBP at, amongst others, the leadoff spot can do for run scoring? Or how batting Patterson and Perez 1 and 2 were directly attributable to their run scoring draughts in 2005?

It's time to back up the truck and dump high priced (I won't say talent) players. Time for Pierre, Jones, Walker, Nevin, Perez Wood, Roush, to move on. We can move them for players in their minor leagues or players on the 40 man rosters. It is a mystery who we can talk into taking thest players, Not everyone is as lame as the Cubs management. Lets move on. I can accept losing with young players that are learning, but not with more experienced players like we are doing.

We also have several players who are in our minor leagues that need to play and learn in the majors. What good is it to keep a struggling Pie in AAA when he could be moved to the big club and have better instructors and learn on the job. lets make a lost season wortwhile by bring up and playing younger players.

I like the idea of going with Hill, Guzman and Murton for the remainder of the season but, in all honesty, Pie is receiving much better instruction at Iowa then he'd ever get from the likes of Clines, Matthews and Baker.

I agree. Keep the young players away from these three. The solution is to fire, Clines, Matthews and Baker, and then play the younger ones.

The problem is that the Cubs will end up paying some or most of the salary to "dump" these players, so it might be a great idea to play the kids, but the Cubs certainly won't be saving much money.

At this point, I don't care if the Cubs save money, if they can move the "bums" off this team (Everybody knows then verbatim), then that would more the helpful to this team.
