Anyone else think the Cubs rushed him back from his surgery, considering what's been happening lately?

Seriously, this team has so poorly mismanaged Wood's arm during his time here. It's a miracle he hasn't pulled a Dave Dravecky yet.

The way the Cubs have dealt with Wood over the past two seasons has been completely stupid. That they were even considering a 4-man rotation with Wood in it recently ticks me off. Now we'll hear whispers and murmerings about what a wimp Wood is and how he hates the Cubs yadda yadda yadda.

I've posted this sentence before, but:

Only the Cubs would get 3 of the most talented pitchers of the generation and have 2 of their careers completely ruined by injuries. If any other team had had Wood, Prior and Z for the last four years, they'd all be Cy candidates. I'm absolutely certain of this.

Even though Wood will probably make more starts this year, he's basically off the team as far as I'm concerned.

I don't know if he was rushed back. They expected his arm strength to get better more quickly than it has, but I don't think that was an unrealistic expectation. Plus, I don't think there's been any harm done to his shoulder. In retrospect, it would have been better to bring him along more slowly, but it's probably not a big deal. In the end, the timeline probably wouldn't have been that different (although he probably would've performed better with the Cubs, but it's not like they're in the middle of a race right now).

If in fact the Cubs have been rushing Wood and Prior back during their careers, then they aren't major league pitchers. I'm sorry, but no other two guys of their profile have missed as much time, so for me, to even imply the Cubs weren't extremely careful with them seems absolutely insane.

Bruce Miles in the Daily Herald[/url]"]Wood’s shoulder problems cropped up early last season. The Cubs took him out of the starting rotation after 10 starts and allowed him to work out of the bullpen from late July until late August.

The Cubs have come under criticism for allowing Wood to pitch when they knew he needed shoulder surgery, perhaps delaying his recovery time.

“Did you see how he was throwing?” asked Baker, noting that Wood was throwing in the upper 90s (mph) as a reliever. “And did we have a shot still of trying to get to the playoffs? No, I have no second guess, and Woody doesn’t, either.”

Wood concurred with Baker but was more reflective on the question than he has been.

“It depends on who you ask,” Wood said. “I think the decision we made last year at the time was the right decision, in my mind and in our minds, for what we were trying to accomplish with getting to the postseason and winning a championship.

“We were technically still in it. I made a decision to do what I could to help the team, and that was to go out and get an inning or two here at a time and do what I could to help.

“No, I don’t think it was the wrong decision. We made it, and we live with it.”

With Hendry and Baker here this organization is only going to get worse.

Everyone on the planet wanted Wood to be shut down. Except those who make the decisions. How stupid is that?

Still though. Considering Wood's poor mechanics, it's hard to know if they would have just delayed the inevitable by shutting him down. I have no clue. Either way, it's hard to dispute the mismanagement of our starting staff over the past 4 seasons.

I understand these guys are all about making excuses, but they really do believe their own crap, don't they?
