Well, I thought I would never be saying this, but at least if nothing else, it is going to make the decision on whether to pick up that option a lot easier. If it was mediocre starts, then they would be on the fence on picking it up. If he spends most of the year on the DL, it will be a no brainer.

What do you think the chances are that Wood goes to the Yankees as a FA, they give him a two-year deal, and it turns into gold for both parties?

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he went anywhere else next year and was healthy.

This DL trip seems different to me. I feel closure in that I've completely given up on Kerry and am ready for his Cubs career to end.

Could not agree with you more. I'm not shocked nor am I bummed. I'm glad we will be without Wood starting next year. Time to move on already!

So let's see next years staff so far.

Z

Prior (we'll see)

Marshall

MARMOL!!!

Everything else looks up in the air.

Fixed. Hey, I can hope can't I?

Marmol or Guzman or even Hill (if he ever over his fear of the Major Leagues)....

They way this Org. been going the past couple of years I wouldn't be surprised if he won a Cy Young wearing Cardinal Red. Typing that just made me sick!

right now the cubs are better off w/ guzman starting over wood.

hopefully they keep starting Guzman for the rest of the year. In fact keep starting Guzman and Hill in place of Wood and Rusch. We have to see what we have for enxt year and the future.

looks like he'll have plenty of opportunity.. either wood or prior will be out from here on.

seriously, bring him back as a reliever when he returns. get something for this bum in a trade. he looked good out of the pen last year. perhaps his arm only has 30-40 pitches per outing left in it.

Last year in the pen he was still pitching 97-98 MPH. This year he's been at around 90-91. That's not going to cut it in the pen.

i thought he was throwing it 94-95 a few outings ago?? since he's starting, he may be trying to conserve himself. put him in the pen and he can air it out for an inning.

He was having trouble pitching 90 in his last start.

I don't really care to be honest.

The rotation should be the following for the rest of the year ...

Z

Maddux

Marshall

Prior

Marmol/Hill/Guzman

Deal Maddux at the deadline and add Hill or Guz to the rotation. Pick which one you want to develop and KEEP him there for the rest of the season. If Marmol proves to be a bust or pitches better out of the bullpen, add the other one.

Next year, we should have at least 3 young arms in Z, Prior, and Marshall. If even one of the three of Marmol, Guz, or Hill works out, then the rotation is almost set.

Certainly we're in full-blown development mode now. I'd start evaluating the young players.

But it's the Cubs. Prepare for 4 more months of Neifi and getting shut out with no clue on what our young players have to offer.

If we are going to go with young arms next year I for one hope we sign Maddux again for next year. I think he keeps the kids stable.

Do you have any proof to back that up? One could just as easily say that Maddux keeps Wood and Prior injured - these shenanigans began in 2004, when the Cubs signed him, after all.

maddux is about done. deal him off to a contender for a prospect and let him finish out his great career in a pennant chase.

i proposed maddux, williamson & hill for joel guzman in the transaction forum.

I only go by what young kids like Marshall seems to say about him. Regardless if you have a young staff it'll be wise to have a veteren presence and I can't of any better then Maddux.

Fine. Sign Maddux as pitching coach. Problem solved.

Does anyone think this will be motivate KW to consider moving to the bullpen? Think about it. Wouldn't it be in his best interest to come back in the second half of the year and prove that he has what it takes to close. The Cubs might be inclined to re-negoitate his deal or he'd be more marketable. As it is, how much do you think he'd get after the Cubs release him? I think he has what it takes to be a (and possibly THE) dominant closer in the game. Let's hope he talks with Smoltz, Eck or Gagne, and they can talks some sense into him.

this would be kerry's wisest move, but kerry's not the brightest guy, so i'm not getting my hopes up. these texans are real stubborn.

Seems like some of Cubs fans have been saying this for the past 2 years. If Maddux wants to be traded then trade him other wise Keep him.

The problem with that is Maddux is still playing...

Closure is a sadly appropriate word.

Who cares? He's just Pattersoned himself. I don't care if he wins three Cy Youngs in a row with the Cardinals. It's time for him to go, and it's too bad things played out this way. Now we see what happens with Prior this year and possibly cut the cord with him too.

Will they now schedule Kerry Wood day for Sept.? Celebrate his 20 K game and performance in the 03' playoffs, both of which ultimately contributed to his demise?

Who didnt see this coming etc.

A lot of people thought Wood and Prior would be healthy this year. Maybe it was just blind optimism.

Posted

if kerry has any loyalty to the cubs and a conscious (he's been paid a ton w/ very little in return), he'll pitch out of the pen the remainder of the season and agree to an incentive laden 1 year deal, w/ a base of $3 million where he can make up to $8 million.

it may not be a bad option. those 3 year offers may start drying up.

turn him into smoltz/eckersley/gagne. just don't let him get a hold of the whatever substance gagne took.

This stinks. As frustrating as it's been with all the injuries...when Wood was on the mound, there was no one I'd rather watch. It'd be hard to see him pitch in another uniform, but I really can't see him here beyond this year.
