Tony Womack may be the next minor-league call-up to try to solve the Cubs' dilemma at second base.

WHAT DILEMMA? Why hurridly bring up a terrible Womack when you can try that person that sits on the end of the bench who Dusty thinks is the waterboy or something.

If it keeps Neifi off of the field, I'm all for it.

Get ready for a MIF combo of Neifi-Cedeno-Womack-Walker when Aram's injuries act up again.

Or even better, Ramirez-Neifi-Womack-Walker!

He signed a minor-league deal with the Cubs last week. He hit .226 in '03 with three teams, including the Cubs, .307 in '04 with St. Louis and .249 last year with the Yankees.

If the Cubs are cursed. Then the St. Louis Cardinals are anti-cursed. How the hell do they keep turning .250 hitters into .300 hitters, and crap pitchers into quality #5 guys.

The most disturbing part of the article for me:

They said he wants to play good enough down there to force us, force me to call him up. And that's fine with me."

It sounds as if Baker has a lot of say in roster decisions.

Neifi and Hairston have both sucked this year. I don't have a problem with giving Womack a shot.
Agreed, but why don't Theriot get a shot too? Hes been here since the 8th and hasn't had 1 start. I'd rather see Bynum over those too also. I've seen those 2 long enough. Neifi is basically a late inning defensive sub and Hairston has no business on a winning team. Well,I guess Hairston fits in well with this team.

Once upon a time, people were saying the same thing when a particular SS was picked up off the scrap heap. "Our SS's already suck," they once said, " what's the harm in giving Neifi Perez a shot."

The harm is that if Womack hits superficially well (along the lines of an empty .280 BA), the Cubs won't resist bringing him back, possibly to a multi-year deal and possibly as a starter. Hendry and the Cubs are stupid that way.

Nothing good can come of Tony Womack.

I don't see how Womack can possibly be any worse than Neifi/Hairston. Do I like the fact that we're at the point where we're about to call up Tony freakin Womack? No, of course not. But given the circumstances, I don't mind giving him a shot.

I am encouraged by this. It would certainly explain a lot. Since Hendry is seemingly here to stay, it gives me some hope that perhaps Hendry, outside of Dusty's sphere of influence, might be a little less clueless than he appears to be.

It's something anyway.

I'm not saying he'd be any worse. My fear is that he will be better. Let's just say he hits somewhere around his career numbers of .273/.316/.356. Now we all know those numbers are pretty meager. But the Cubs will look at that .273 batting average and think they've found themselves a player. There'd be a real possibility of the Cubs going into next year thinking they've "solved" second base.

Even if he is better than Neifi/Hairston, Womack doesn't help them that much in the short run and can only hurt them in the long run.

Just wonderful, another 2B is EXACTLY what this team needs to win. Hendry is stretching here even by his own standards. At this point, I really don't think anybody on the coaching staff is getting fired either.

Not only is bringing Womack in a bad idea in that he may do well and than have the Cubs sign him to a ludicrios 2 yr contract. It also says that Hendry thinks this season is still salvagable and may do something really stupid like trade a lot of young talent (Pie) for Soriano.

The fact that Theriot didnt even get a chance while the ship is sinking helps reinforce what most here believe about Dusty, when given a choice between a veteran or a rookie he will almost always go with the veteran. Even if they are clearly not getting the job done.
