According to Rosenthal...

In case you're wondering, Cubs right-hander Greg Maddux has full no-trade protection, giving him the right to veto any deal. It's difficult to imagine the Cubs even entertaining the idea, but Maddux, 40, has shown past interest in playing for the Dodgers and Padres. Dodgers GM Ned Colletti was a Cubs executive during Maddux's first tour with the team.

This surely complicates things if the Cubs are to go into fire sale mode.

Unless Maddux wants to finish the year with a contender, get another shot at a world series.

That's surprising.

Rosenthal must have information that Nate Silver doesn't:

Maddux does not have a no-trade clause, and there’s a reasonable possibility that whoever loses the Roger Clemens derby might be willing to flip an A-minus prospect or a decent arbitration-eligible outfielder to "settle" for Maddux. Even someone like Bobby Abreu, perhaps with the Phillies picking up some contract, would represent a better allocation of baseball resources for the 2007 club.

As TT has mentioned before, there may be some confusion over whether the non-trade protection would have carried over into the vesting option year (this year).

I think as a practical matter that -- if the current Cubs regime stays intact -- Maddux wouldn't be traded without agreeing to it, regardless. JMO.

Agreed. I can't see the Cubs moving Maddux without him being onboard.

But if things continue to get worse, I don't see him having any trouble with being traded, so long as it's to a top contender.

If Roger stays in Texas, I could see the Yankees or Red Sox making a move for Maddux. Perhaps Maddux and Hairston for Cano? I'd have no problem paying their 2006 tabs to make it happen.

For the Red Sox, I could see us landing Trot Nixon with a package starting with Maddux, once Coco Crisp is healthy.

Why is Cano worth trading for?

Nixon I could see if we had a RH platoon parter, since he's pretty much like Jones is in regards to LHP, but I can't see dealing for him when our manager thinks a platoon is that neato movie with the Two and a Half Men guy

Maddux has always been opposed to pitching in the A.L. I suppose things could always change, but -- if he were to agree to a trade -- I think an NL team would be a much likelier destination.

Maddux wouldn't bring that much in a trade, sorry to say.

The best case scenario is that Arizona, LA, SD and SF are all in the race for the West at the end of June. Hendry approaches Maddux and he approves a trade to any team near enough to Vegas and his home in CA. Those teams have the following players in their rotations:

AZ:

O Hernandez - 6.11 ERA

Russ Ortiz - 6.91 ERA

Claudio Vargas - 5.25 ERA

Juan Cruz - 5.61 ERA

SD:

Chan Ho - 4.53 ERA

Clay Hensley - 4.37 ERA

LA:

Odalis - 6.97 ERA

Jae Seo - 5.31 ERA

Aaron Sele - blowup yet to occur, but nearly a sure thing

SF:

Matt Morris - 5.43 ERA (teeheehee)

Matt Cain - 5.47 (I expect him to improve, though)

Obviously my choice would be to work a deal with AZ or LA, where the prospect we receive back would stand a very good chance of being an excellent player.

I don' think the Dodgers will be too much of a factor in getting Maddux. Unless they are willing to give up Billingsley and/or another top prospect for Maddux...they ain't going to get Maddux. I think there is too much bitterness from the Milton Bradley fiasco for the Colleti and Hendry to pull off a trade.

The Bradley fiasco is not how I interpreted the bad blood between Coletti and Hendry. I believe it goes back farther than that and that Bradley getting traded to the A's instead of the Cubs was a symptom of that bad blood.

That Hendry can't get along with other GM's wouldn't be that big of a deal in my eyes if that was his only issue, but given all of his other inadequacies, only fuels my desire to see him kicked to the curb.

As far as a "fire sale", I don't think Hendry would ever do it. It would reflect on him making big mistakes personnel wise and I can't imagine him admitting that.

Wow, Matt Morris has been bad this season? Who didn't see that one coming?

Didn't. Should have.

The Yankees LOVE overpaying for older, past their prime pitchers these days. Give them Murton, Cedeno, Maddux, Marshall and Hill for A-Rod.

Man, I love video game trades.

The Cubs will keep Maddux around and he'll leave next year as an non restriction free agent. IMO too many Cub fans would scream bloody murder if the Cubs dealt him and that's a move Hendry would fear to do more than anything. You see...we have to have our favorite players on the team for entertainment value. Now I can go to a game and say I saw Maddux. Ask me if the Cubs won I'll say I have no clue but I'm just thrilled to have watched Greg pitch. The two things the brain trust for the Cubs can't do and that is lose AND get rid of the local favorites.

Sad but true. See Sammy being held onto a couple seasons too long for the best recent example. Trade smart...it would be a nice change of pace. Get to the luxury of being in the position where you can be a cozy home for your old favorites as they slow down...byt becoming a contending team! Until then, sliding veterans held on just to appease the halfhearted tourists are just indicative of the never ending cycle of futility.
