I usually don't indulge in picking apart everything Dusty says, but did anyone see his statement in today's Trib about throwing tantrums and flipping the clubhouse spread? It was classic Baker. I would post it myself, but I read the Trib on the "L" in the morning, so I do not have a password to the online version. Perhaps someone else can post it.

"I've never thrown a food spread," Baker said. "I tore up stuff when I was a player. I was called in one time for [acting angry]. They said it wasn't indicative of my personality when I was with the Dodgers, tearing up stuff. So they wanted me to seek some counseling.

"I remember [former Braves manager] Eddie Mathews turned over a food spread once. What good does that do? To get your blood pressure up, and you can die of a heart attack? After Eddie turned it over one time, it was hot dogs, and we thought it was ridiculous. We even went and washed the hot dogs and ate 'em."

I'm not asking him to flip over spreads, but show some kind of enthusiasm...some kind of fire...argue some close calls, get kicked out of a game in a lopsided loss...do something to show your team you care, and you're not gonna take this kind of play sitting down.

I remember another famous quote by a former Cub manager.

"Nice guys finish last."

Isn't that the same guy that said, "this isn't a 6th place team" and proved it by finsihing 8th. :D

The Cubs have been blessed with great managers over the years.

Who is for digging up Cap Anson's bones and putting them in the dugout? :help:

Any of the interviews I have seen with him the last week or so, he is always laughing and carrying on like there is nothing wrong....makes me nautious.

I don't want to start a new thread for every Dusty quote, so I'll put this here...from Sportsline.com's article "Struggling Scrubs"...ugh....

He has tried being aggressive, but when the Cubs swiped five bases against San Diego last Saturday, they still mustered only one run. The Padres won 2-1.

"I believe in being aggressive, but it's not easy being aggressive when you're getting two-out singles," Baker says.

I don't even know what that means....aren't two-out hits a GOOD thing?

I read that to mean nobody was getting hits with less than 2 outs, making it more difficult for the ones who got the 2-out hit to score.

I'm pretty sure Mark Grace got a few hits when it mattered too. Or, so they say.

I liked everything Dusty said in that piece.

I wish he were better at his job though.

I feel the same way on both counts.

Of course there are many here who think our sorry roster would suddenly start winning ballgames if we had a manager who showed FIRE! and INTENSITY!

When Dusty came to the Cubs, we heard about how scrappy his teams were. He was a motivational master and that his teams didn't quit on him. How motivated to the Cubs look to you?

I'd prefer Baker to be gone, but if he's going to stay, I at least want him to do what he's supposed to be good at.

He left out the part about dipping them in mustard.

I want Dusty to show some emotion during the game, get his ass out there and argue a call, get thrown out, and really just let loose. Maybe his players would see it and really rally and starting playing some damn baseball.
