"He's still trying to learn and implement some of the things he is being taught by us,'' Baker said. "I asked what he was thinking in one situation, and he told me he was trying to remember what I told him two, three days ago. I told him that's fine, but think about it before you get to the plate.

"I'm trying to teach guys how to hit with men in scoring position and how to stay out of double plays, how you score a guy from first hitting gap to gap.''

All in all, Murton has been impressive.

"For a young man that everyone was afraid how he was going to do, he's done pretty darn good,'' Baker said.

Yeesh. Why does this scare me? Seems like Corey had trouble with being given too much info to remember, and I'd REALLY hate to see that with Murton...

Maybe I'm over-reacting...

We'd all like to tell you that you are, but we know better.

I read that too, and it scared the crap out of me as well. I like to think that Murton already has his head on his shoulders enough that he won't be entirely ruined.

From what I remember the only person "who was afraid how he was going to do" was Baker.

I have a feeling that Murton already knew what he was doing when he got here. Baker needs to stay out of his way.

Entirely ruined sounds pretty harsh. The quote does not have enough context for me to really make judgement myself. There just aren't enough specifics as to what the actual advice given was...

But what limited advice listed in the quote is accurate, so I'm not worried.

I almost posted this same thing this morning but I thought that I might be over-reacting as well. It is somewhat troublesome to hear though. Baker, et al. start trying to get Murton to "implement some of the things he is being taught" and he starts struggling. Hopefully it will pass. I just hope Murton doesn't lose his patience at the plate. I'll try not to read too much into this for now.

That's pretty telling, when a corner outfielder with a sub-.800 OPS is one of your more positive things so far.

Yeah he shoulda said something about a sub 800 OPS being unacceptable from a corner OF. That would've went over much better.

Maybe he's tuning out Baker's advice anyway. If he couldn't remember what he told him, he probably just used it as an excuse to cover deciding never to try it in the first place.

Before the season, there were people here concerned about OBP because he got lucky hits last year.

As close as you're going to get to seeing dusty say "I don't like playing young people"

batting 8th today? good spot for his .370 OBP.

.326 vs RHP.

Still way way way better than Pierre's garbage, even against RHP. I say bat him first or second, especially against LHP. Then maybe Ramirez and Barrett will have an opportunity to hit some guys in for once.

The power spike hasn't come yet, and I don't expect it until next year, so he is a top of the order type of guy, rather than an sixth or eighth hitter.

I was concerned that maybe Baker and the hitting coaches would mess with his approach, but Murton still has a very nice OBP. Why are some people getting concerned about his power numbers? Maybe he's just a gap to gap hitter and not a real power hitter. Again, I'm more hopeful of his future than what I would've been had he been a Cub farm product.

pierre's obp v. righties is .330, but a god awful .178 v. lefties.

mabry should be batting 9th. bum.
