I have for one, while trying to be optimistic during the offseason has always thought this team here is just not up to snuff.

Why must us cubbie fans who love the team and goto 12-20 games a season suffer with this crud?

God we need something, like an offense .

This is a finesse offense and there's absolutely no finesse without Lee.

By the time Lee returns its going to be awful tough to catch up to the Cardinals, Reds, Astros and Brewers... Yes, I think the doomsayers are correct.

Every Cub fans most hated four words are upon us again, "Wait til next year."

wood replacing hill is one helluva upgrade. the offence is starting to show a little life. they can hit plenty of singles, but nothing else. gotta give sd some credit too. they've won 9 in a row, ya know.

yes, it's remarkable. 2nd in the NL in singles/ab. but, as anyone who knows baseball said, this team would fall apart after they stopped overachieving w/risp...

the cubs shouldn't be giving anyone credit. the padres had to do very little to sweep this series. that's a reflection on the cubs terrible approach at the plate and players throwing baseballs all over the diamond...

wood will probably replace guz. who cares who's pitching if you are last in baseball in scoring runs ?

There's at least one other team whose fans are starting to doubt; you can read all about it here.

Take particular note of what the writer has to say about how one tell the season is over. That's about half way down.

So I am moved to ask, just how are things in the Cubs clubhouse I wonder?

I'm guessing you mean this graph:

I fear that this continued offensive morass will start to open fissures in the rock-solid clubhouse the Angels have enjoyed during the Mike Scioscia Era. When a pitcher goes out and shuts another team down — and still walks away a loser — how long before snide comments and finger pointing starts? How long can a clubhouse remain silent before the entire team just shuts down?

That’s when the season is officially over, regardless of what the standings say.

And you make a great point. How soon before the finger-pointing starts and can the Master Motivator and Great Players' Manager keep it from tearing the team apart?

That's the part I meant. All the more reason that Kerry Wood returns soon. From what I have read here, and elsewhere, he was always regarded as a leader. That's what they need.

Perhaps mark Prior could help in this regard too, but I don't look for him to return any time soon.

I still have hope that the Cubs have the ability to have a winning, even respectable season, at the very least. But if that group of men loses it's internal cohesion, that's it, regardless of their ability, and regardless of what happens to Baker.

So I'll watch tonight, and hope.

If we all remember, we were all touting 2006 as the year, I am still trying to figure out (now) how Wood and Prior will make that much of a difference. I am hoping for a run at the wild-card. Dusty just doesn't have the "fire-em-up" "get Pissed" attitude like scrap iron Garner.

That's all Garner's good at though. He's not much better at in-game management than Baker is.

The only people I know of who were touting 2006 as "the year" were people who said, "Red Sox in 04, White Sox in 05...so it's gotta be the Cubs in 06!" I always thought that those people were deranged or delusional, or both. This team, even without the Prior, Wood, and Lee injuries, would be lucky to make the playoffs.

I wouldn't be surprised if they remained 2nd in singles all year long. The one thing this offense can really do well is get singles, and we see the results, which is why I've been saying for a long time that the Cubs need more power, which gets shot down by the calls for more walks.

I like walks and power. Or powerwalks.

I am more a fan of walking with power. Kind of a strut to first base like Mick Jagger.

Wholy false choice, Batman! Nevertheless, put a couple of walks in front of a couple of singles and you might get a couple of runs. Put a couple of ground outs in front of a couple of singles and you got bumkis.

Yeah I 2nd the walk with power motion, we need more guys getting the pimp stroll on when walking to 1st to show the power.

seriously though, as much as I like hendry, as much as I want to blame lee, wood, prior injuries for the current situation, while murton and cedeno are great at getting on base and making contact. As many have said we needed that one extra power bat for RF and in my opinion the JJ thing was the downfall to the offense this year.

Pierre I can live with, at least when he gets on base he can steal.

Cedeno and Murton are just fine

Aram is off to a slow start, he will eventually get back on track.

but we need 1 more threat to go yard at any given at bat.

..... at least look at it this way if we win in 2007, at least we won the series on the 100 year anniversary of our last one.

Is anybody else seeing Jack McKeon coming in after Baker gets the boot and running Juan Pierre, DLee, and our pitching staff into the playoffs?

Guilty. Although I said it in more of a joking manner and I wasn't really serious about it.
