I dont have a oujia board with me. Can someone break theirs out and check on our status with the Ruth now?

It would be nice if we could put one of the 3 curses to rest, and having his daughter and grandson sing was a nice touch. Hopefully the hard feelings from '32 will ease and that curse will be broken.

Now for the damn Goat and Witch.

The Babe was very pleased with the day's proceedings. He's "tenderizing" the goat with his Louisville Slugger as we speak.

Pardon my stupidity, but I've never heard of the witch curse. Could someone enlighten me?

The Curse of the Witch is a rather murky story involving Voodoo and some other stuff from 1908. It has long been rumored to do with several things the Cubs were involved in. Like the 1932 curse, it is another Curse of Hubris. It has to do with the Game covered most excellently by Wiley here 1908 that probably led to the eventual formation of the Negro Leagues.

Apparently at some point the story goes that Rube or one of his cohorts contacted a local medicine woman to place a curse on the Cubs for 100 years for the chicanery that was happening. The rest as they say is history and our only 2 Modern Championships remain 1907 and 1908.

I will dig a little deeper and see if i can find some more facts or another reference for you.

Edit: There apparently is an alternate version of this story as well. The alternate story has to do with the NY Giants tieing to the Cubs on Sept 23rd, 1908 in the infamous play known as Merkle's Boner. In that story, the Witch was hired by disgruntled Giant fans for the behavior of Chance, the Cub fans, and the Cubs after the Game was over. It eventually led to the Giants and Cubs meeting on October 8th to determine the NL Champ, which the Cubs won en route to the series victory over the Tigers.

So let me get this straight. The curse placed on the Cubs was a 100 year curse? And this was done in 1908???

Well hot damn, we only have a few more years and the Cubs will be winning the Series again.

Just maybe I will get to see a Chicago Cubs World Championship before I die.

Man does that have a nice ring or what? Chicago Cubs World Series Champs.

How about if the curse was done in Canadian time, maybe it would have ended sooner and this could be the year?

The alternative version doesn't make any sense though...it makes it sound as if the curse were placed before the '08 series, which we subsequently won.

Here's a thought...if you can get a witch to place a 100 year curse on a team, then why don't we just find 29 of these gals and place 100 year curses on the other 29 teams? Someone's gotta win, even if everyone is cursed. That's even the playing field (although our curse would be up in a couple...)

I just hope the Cubs don't have his daughter in the broadcast booth anymore.

Why's that? I thought they were some of the most articulate baseball-loving folks to ever grace the booth, and was glad the Cubbies cooperated by having a long 1/2 of an inning. I thoroughly enjoyed their time in the booth, if we have to have anyone there. Heck, I wouldn't mind the grandson take over as play-by-play announcer over some of our more recent (not Len) guys.

The only major leaguer my hometown ever produced was Fred Merkle.

Yeah.

even if the cubs don't win immediately after the 100 year curse ends, they will win in 2015 over Miami. It's in Back to the Future, it has to be true

I'm not a fan of the 7th inning interviews no matter who it is. Ruth's daughter, while maybe a big fan of baseball, did not put out much of a coherent thought. Just talk about the game. Her son on the other hand, was fine and that's why I didn't comment on him.
