Should shut up about Jose Mesa and the 97 World Series.

This jerk managed to bat .233 in the WS that year with only one RBI. In the deciding game 7, he went 1 for 5 with 2 strike outs, no RBI, no runs scored. In the third inning, with runners on 2nd and 3rd, he popped out.

In the top of the tenth, he lead off with a strike out. Tony Fernandez, who saved his butt in the 3rd by singling in the 2 runners he stranded, then got a single.

It should also be pointed out that Mesa didn't lose the game, Nagy did.

Mesa might have blown the save, but considering how little Vizquel did, he has no right to complain.

The "vacant eyes" comment in his book was over the top and unnecessary, IMO. But Mesa needs to be a man and let his stupid grudge go too. I mean how dumb is it to publicly announce that you are going to bean Vizquel everytime you face him. Almost as dumb as the umpiring crew for not knowing the history there.

Again I just dont understand ML umpiring. This isnt very similar to the earlier incident with the Mets and the Nats. If they are going to keep on punishing the retaliator(and not the instigator) there is going to be alot more bean ball incidents.

I have always liked omar vizguel as a player but he really shouldnt have written what he did in a book.

I think they should wait until there's a bench clearing brawl, then eject and punish the losers. Finish a brawl a winner farnsworth style, and you get to go on unpunished! :D

That'd make baseball more interesting right there...

I actually agree with the way the umpires handled it.

They had a meeting with both teams before the game and let both managers and pitchers know they were not going to tolerate anymore foolishness. I understand that Morris has wild spurts like Wood and Zambrano, but it was the 2nd guy he hit in the 1st inning that got him launched. It was just bad timing. The umps erred on the side of caution instead of seeing someone actually get hurt (this isnt hockey for Gods sakes).

A Giant did get hit in the 6th and the Rockie pitcher did not get tossed because the umps didnt feel that it was warranted. However, when King plunked Vizquel in the 8th, there was little that they could do and had to throw him out for that. (I miss Ray King on our club, he has a great attitude).

So in short, kudos to the umps for handling it the way that they did. They took a bad situation and did the best they could with it. Its up to Watson and company to sort it out and make sure it doesnt happen again. In other words, I really miss Frank Robinson in that job.

Both Matt Morris and Ray King deserved to get tossed but Jeff Francis should have been tossed also. I'm not saying that his pitch was intentional, but isn't the point of warning both teams to say "if you bean somebody, you'll get tossed?" Francis beaned Finley and should have been tossed. The way you differentiate between the beanings is you suspend Morris and King but not Francis. But he should have been tossed since the umpires had warned both teams. Intentional or not, you set a standard and you have to keep it.
