Any early feedback on the 2007 draft class? The Cubs are looking at a potential mother-lode of picks. Pierre, Wood, Maddux, Miller & Walker are all potentially arbitration-worthy players. I don't want to cloud the thread with discussions of whether the Cubs offer to all those guys (or which ones), but I think we'll end up with at least an extra pick or two somewhere. So I'm curious about what the class looks like as a whole. I know 2006 is looking disappointing so far. Here's hoping 2007 look stronger!

Personaly, I would the Cubs to draft a PLAYER who could potentially help THIS yr. Forget the option clock nonsense, if the Cubs can help, let him help.

While I won't argue that this Cub team needs help now, this is the 2007 draft thread.

I stand by my statement. The Cubs need help, even if they have to borrow it. :D

Well at the rate the Cubs are going, they'll have a high first round draft pick to select a future centerpiece of the team like Corey Patterson, Luis Montanez, or Ryan Harvey. Oh wait, did I say centerpiece? I meant colossal flop.

Do you think that the Cubs are the only team with this sort of problem with top prospects? Just looking back over past drafts, 3 of the top 5 picks in the 2002 draft still haven't even played in anything above A-Ball. Usually each year the top picks are based alot on hype and signability. The draft is always filled with guys that haven't done much yet but are just waiting to bust out, while others have already reached their peak and will only get worse in the pros.

Yes, but look at all the great prospects the Cubs supposedly had back in the 2001-2003 stretch when the system was considered the strongest in baseball. Patterson, Montanez, Choi, Kelton, Guzman, Cruz, Prior, etc. How many impact players on the Cubs actually came from that group? Prior, but even he can't stay healthy. At least they've used some of those pieces (like Hill and Choi) to acquire the two best hitters on the team, but even the players they traded away in those deals have busted. Whether it's bad luck or poor player development, or a combination of both - the potential of the minor league system has been far behind the actual output.

The 2007 class is a very strong class, much stronger than the 2006 class, especially at the high school level. Its still too early to pick the top draft player in May of 2006, but there will be some stars. Stock, Main, Tolisano, Bumgarner, Rams, Burgess, Heyward to name a few.

I have a friend who has some insider access to scouts and coaches. Apparently Stock is the clear-cut favorite to be the #1 overall pick...assuming he doesn't make insane demands.

Stock is freaking awesome. Kid was throwing 90 mph at age 15.

Its not always a good thing to be throwing 90 at 15 yrs old, as several youngsters end up with serious arm problems. This was the case with Michael Main out of Florida. He was throwing 90-91 as a 15yr old, but has not been pitching regularly for the past two year due to arm problems. He is now back to pitching at 92-93 and is an absolute stud overall. But in Stock's case, now he's 17 throwing 94-95 consistently. Stock is very interesting as he is equally as talented as a position player.

A 2007 grad that has popped up this spring is Madison Bumgarner out of NC. He's a 6-6 LHP thats popping it at 94-95 hitting an occasional 97-98 mph.

I finally was able to upload the videos of Scherzer! These are both from his March 10th start. They were taken with my digital camera at the only spot I wasn't obstructed by the screen or other people, so you basically just get a good look at his mechanics.

It seems to be that way, especially the way David Price has faltered the last month or so. His ERA has gone up over a run his last few outings. He's really struggled since that 17 strikeout performance against Arkansas.

* relief appearance

I talked to a scout friend of mine in the middle of April and he said that there was a chance that Price develops into a lefty version of Prior over the next year. He's really struggled with his command since. Sure it's a tougher schedule, but still he should be able to do a little better. If he falters more then fine. The Cubs will probably end up picking 5-10 next season and he might be there for the Cubs depending on who his agent is. It's almost like I want him to sign with Boras so we can get him.

If Stock and Price are gone, there is still a lot of talent next year. I am a big fan of JP Arencibia and a healthy Joe Savery myself. I'd love for the Cubs to walk out of 2007 with Arencibia in the top 10. He's going to be very advanced and handles pitchers well. Now if only someone can teach Jim Hendry the concept of stockpiling picks, not giving them up...

Looking back after the draft and a bit of this season has gone by, I wonder if the Cubs woul offer arbitration to any of these players. The only one I would is to Todd Walker, and Cubs management can't stand him and might not do it.

It'd be great to see the Cubs get some extra picks in 2007 to make up the loss of 3 picks this year.

i dont see walker being with the cubs after the july trading deadline. with womack producing so far at 2b, walker will be prime trade bait imo.
