Mario66 (Toronto): Best guess: where do David Price, Matt Weiters and Andrew Brackman place in the top 100 (if at all) next year? Who else if anyone from the 2007 draft class makes the cut?

Kevin Goldstein: Top 10; Top 30; Top 60. Others to think about: Julio Borbon (Vandy), Michael Burgess (Florida HS)

I want Price so bad

I think I'd rather have Weiters.

Given our clubs offensive woes and pitching depth, I'm sure I'm rather have Weiters.

Price is done:

5.2 IP

5 H

3 ER

2 BB

10 Ks

Overall: 17.2 IP, 3 GS, 7 ER, 14 H, 28 K/ 5 BB, 3 HBP, 3.57 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, .212 BAA

he didn't look great yesterday...couldn't get ahead in the count...but he did make some really nice pitches when he needed them.

I've been telling you guys we're taking Burgess. He's from Tampa Florida and is a toolsy OF with a lot of power who got ripped to pieces in the Aflac game by breaking pitches.

While i'm sure that's true since you've probably seen it, his profile at brewerfan.net (i'm pretty sure someone posted the site before...but it's great with a bunch of recent profiles on alot of prospects) made it seem like he's played very well at most showcase events again top flight pitchers. Plus it also mentions a good eye at the plate.

Few players have the kind of power that Burgess displays on a regular basis. What is impressive about that power potential is that is more than just potential, as he has hit some of the best pitchers in the nation in numerous showcase events while also showing that power in games and tournaments. He generates his power with an incredibly quick bat, a bat that whips through the zone, using strong hands and wrists. He has an athletic, strong and compact body that allows him to maintain his bat control while also displaying a keen eye at the plate. On top of his power bat, Burgess has an incredibly strong arm, and has touched 94 off the mound, although he doesn't show much interest in pitching. His power/power profile makes him a perfect fit for right field, where he also has above average speed and range. Burgess hails from Hillsborough High School in Tampa, Florida, the same school that has produced big-leaguers Dwight Gooden, Carl Everett and Gary Sheffield. Burgess' bat speed is likely to draw some Sheffield-eque comparisons. He has committed to play at Arizona State.

Here's the link to the brewerfan draft site that was posted earlier in the thread in case any one missed it, just click the name for the profiles.

But of course i'm still taking Price, Weiters, Brackman before I sniff Burgess. Just saying I think he will pan out and not be Ryan Harvey the 2nd.

Here's a scout.com mock draft with commentary from a month ago. They have some interesting picks to say the least with St. Clair going 2nd and Brackman going 24th, but most of you will like this pick:

3. Chicago Cubs Matt Wieters, C, S-R, 6’4, 205, Georgia Tech

Matt Wieters is the kind of all-around athlete who looks like he’s playing a different game than other college players. As a sophomore for the Yellow Jackets, he hit .355/.480/.606 with 15 homers. Even more impressive was the fact that he walked (56) more than he struck out (39). He also earned seven saves as the team’s closer using a mid-90s fastball.

A switch-hitter, Wieters already shows big league power to all parts of the yard. He makes consistent contact, as evidenced by his low K-rate, and he can wait for a pitch to drive. Defensively, he still has a lot of work to do, and he would probably benefit from an intense agility training program to improve his footwork and mobility behind the plate. His arm strength will never be a problem, so how hard he works will determine whether his future is at catcher or first base. Either way, his bat will carry him to the bigs.

With no catchers in their system who look like sure-fire big league stars, the Cubs will jump at the chance to grab Wieters.

I think focusing on baseball is paying off for Brackman.

What's nice about the Cubs pick at three is I'd be happy with either Price, Weiters, or Brackman.

Let's hope the Cubs don't blow it and go after Burgess or some toolsy guy like that.

Yep. As of right now i'm slightly hoping Brackman is our guy since I think his mechanics are better than Price's, plus the fact that his wingspan creates the effect of having extra 5-10 MPH on his fastball. A scouting report from a game last week said that he had some pretty insane control of his two seamer, so that's got to be a pretty nasty pitch coming at you at what looks to be 100 MPH.

Price and Weiters will get my juices flowing as well.

That's really the only concern with Price. He's absolutely fantastic, but his mechanics are so odd that when they get out of whack it really does hurt him.

Could the Royals go with a HS pitcher?

There is no clear No. 2 — unlike two years ago when they grabbed third baseman Alex Gordon with the second overall pick.

“The position players as a group this year, collegewise, are extremely weak,” Ladnier said.

“The high school pitching crop is exceptionally good — probably the best I’ve seen. And I think there are good-quality college arms.”
That suggests the Royals could again gamble their first-round pick on a high school pitcher; something they tried with little success during 2000-02 in selecting Mike Stodolka, Colt Griffin and Zack Greinke.
Not all high school pitchers are busts, of course. Florida took Josh Beckett as a 19-year-old with the second overall pick in 1999.

“He’s been pretty good, hasn’t he?” Ladnier observed. “So, it just depends on who we think is the best player.”

“We haven’t narrowed it down yet by any means,” Ladnier cautioned, “but there are as many desirable high school arms available as there are college arms.”

Georgia Tech catcher Matt Wieters is generally ranked as the second-best college prospect and, at this point, appears to be the only nonpitching prospect on the Royals’ short list.

Others ticketed for repeated evaluations include North Carolina State right-hander Andrew Brackman, Clemson left-hander Daniel Moskos, Rice left-hander Joe Savery and Georgia right-hander Joshua Fields.

“I think the top college players have been pretty well-documented,” general manager Dayton Moore said.

“But it’s so early. There will probably be a pool of about 10 players when it’s all said and done.

“We won’t make decisions on players until we have to make decisions.”

Savery is a wild card. He once projected as a potential first overall pick and could zoom up everyone’s list if he makes a successful return from offseason shoulder surgery.

On the season: 15 IP, 4 GS, 2 ER, 11 H, 12 K/4 BB, 1.20 ERA, 1.00 WHIP

The 5 innings was predetermined... I wonder how long until they let him go a little later in games.
