Nobody was comparing their skill sets at the same age, at least I wasn't.

You compared their career path, which insinuates comparing them at similar ages. Lofton is going to be out of baseball in a year or two. You can't compare Pierre now with Lofton now.

I think they will have a similar career paths. I think Pierre will get a three year deal from someone that gets him to 33 or 34.

Lofton played with two teams until the age of 34. After 34 he has bounced around because of his speed. I could see that happening with Pierre too.

And it says nothing about their skills sets except for footspeed. Pierre now is not as good as Lofton was at his age. Of that there is little doubt. But the one thing they have in common is their foot speed.

Lots of players with who can run have similar career paths.

Pat Listasch? Wasn't he on B&B's "Who can it be now?"

or is it just the Mystery Guest?

what about cedeno at leadoff next year? if he does well at the 2 spot why not? then pie can develop lower in the order and give us better D in CF.

I don't really care who hits leadoff. As long as the Cubs don't foolishly overpay due to the perceived "leadoff premium", or try and turn a player into something he is not capable of being. Ideally I'd like whichever non 3/4 hitter with the best OBP to hit leadoff.

Is the word on the street that Hendry is working on an extension for Pierre? I would love to keep Pierre but with Pie in the minors and freaking Jacque Jones' 3 year contract, I'm a bit worried that the cubs will foolishly let Pierre go. Pierre is too valuable to lose and next year we'll be back to our old leadoff problems if we don't keep Pierre.

Pierre's not valuable. Let him go. PLEASE!!

I've heard nothing but good things about EPatt. At this point I'm almost as excited to see him on the big club as I am about Pie.

I like Pierre and feel pretty sure his numbers will improve by years end. Let's take a cautious approach on an extension and see what the numbers look like later in the year. I do however feel I'd like him back if for nothing more than mentoring Pie. Juan has a tremendous work ethic and has what I consider the right pro attitude that could have a great impact on a young guy. Pierre in CF and Pie in RF next season seems real good to me. And in no way do I want Pie leading off next season. Too much pressure for a young kid and Patterson all over again is not my idea of utilizing Pie's skills. He can still steal bases batting somewhere else in the order.

Juan is going to have to earn an extension with his own production, not a theoretical ability to mentor Pie. He'll be getting way too much money to just be an example for good behavior.

depending on his year, I'd like to see the Cubs offer him arby, and actually go and fight it if he accepts and tries to high ball. if he refuses, take the draft pick(s). if he accepts, even in a good year, he doesn't have the numbers to make a legit case for a huge pay increase. then set about doing everything you can to dump Jones.

I'm pretty sure he's not arbitration eligible.

Pierre? He's been arbitration eligible for a few years. The Cubs had to start the arbitration process with him this year before signing him.

He's a free agent this offseason. In order to get compensation for losing him, you'd have to offer him arbitration. His choice then would be to accept it, or reject and sign somewhere else, at which point the Cubs would get compensation.

I'm very excited about EPatt too. I think we're gonna really like him in Chi town. Did you know he already has 10 stolen bases in Double A this year! (Oh yeah, he skipped high A to get to double A.)

It's excited that the Cubs could have 4 of 8 homegrown position players in the line up for some time: Cedeno and Patterson the middle infield, and Murton* and Pie in the outfield. Add Prior, Zambrano, Wood (if he comes back healthy), Guzman, and Marshall in the rotation, and that's a lot of production from the farm. Jake Fox is turning heads now too, giving hope that he could take over from Barrett in a few years.

*I'm including Murton because, although he came over from the Red Sox, he really made his leap forward in the minors as a Cub. It was great scouting by the Cubs to include him in the Nomar deal.

the double A manager also said a pitcher (don't remember his name) who was converted from catcher is really doing well and has stood out.
