4 ) If the Cubs had made the playoffs in 2002, Neifi would have gone down in lore as a Cub hero. It was Neifi's outstanding play that more than made up for the loss of Nomar.

:-k

You know he meant 2004.

Or more likely, 2005.

Whatever year he was talking about, Neifi never had outstanding play.

***edit***Before anybody goes off again, by never, I mean never over the course of a year. Last year Neifi had a great couple weeks, sucked for several months, then had another couple good weeks. But overall, he sucked.

I think "more than made up for the loss of Nomar" is quite the overstatement though.

Well, 2004 was the year we just missed the playoffs and Neifi hit .371 with a near 1.000 OPS in place of Nomar.

Actually, 1998 was the year Neifi entered Cub lore as a hero (with his GW HR against SF to force the one-game playoff, IIRC).

I obviously meant 2004. Sorry for the confusion.

Neifi was barely on the team that year.

In 2004, Neifi had 62 PA's in 23 games with .371/.400/.548/.948 for the Cubs

In 2004, Neifi had 319 PA's in 103 games with .232/.276/.295/.571 for the Giants

Ick.

Nefi is not that good. He is a great backup SS. I like him as a back up, but not as a starter. I wish we had a decent starter. I mean Alex Cintron is as good as Nefi and hes the back up for the SOX.

The Giants have made some pretty stupid moves over the recent years. This was not one of them.

I honestly thought you were talking about 2005. I tend to forget about 2004 a lot because I witnessed first hand the Diaz/Brazill? game. That was just painful.

Yes, Neifi was great for about 12 days there when he hit everything, and supplied some power.

And then he started off 2005 just as hot. Of course, as expected he regressed over time and eventually played so bad in 2005 that he completely erased any positive impact from the hot start.

I know, but SS was a huge black hole for the team that year (hence the Nomar trade). When Nomar was out for a period (9/12-9/21) during a stretch of crucial games, Neifi came in and played well and got some clutch hits. The Cubs finished 8-3 in that stretch.

It wasn't until Nomar came back (around the time of the Mets series), that the Cubs collapsed. That obviously wasn't Nomar's fault. But if the Cubs managed to make the playoffs that year, Neifi's contribution would have been seen as vitally important.

True but the Cubs always hold onto guys like that thinking they will do it again for a whole season. Didn't we sign Gaetti to a two year deal after 98?

I don't know that Neifi is great at anything except making contact at the plate. Be that as it may, being a great backup is like being the skinniest girl weighing over 300 pounds.

He's pretty good defensively.

He sucks offensively - like alot, but every once in awhile he'll provide a spark (like last night)

I'll throw a log on the Neifi fire and admit I may have been wrong about how Dusty will use Neifi this season, although it's a little early to be sure. I'll also say it's pretty pathetic that it's taken 3+ years for Dusty to surprise his critics by deviating from his predictable trademark idiocies. If I have to wait another 3 years for that to happen again then I want a new manager.

Cheers to you. Here's hoping Dusty continues making solid game lineup decisions this season.

In the end, I have no issues with dogging Dusty for placing Neifi in the two-hole last year and denying Cedeno at bats in the middle of the season. These are accurate and legitimate complaints. I'm on that bad decisions wagon.

But Dusty hasn't used Neifi that way this year. Walker and Cedeno have the large majority of starts at 2B and SS respectively. Hairston and Perez have spot starts. So it seems premature for anybody to think that an injury to the starting 1B will result in the 3rd-depth-chart-2B/2nd-depth-SS suddenly gettng all the starts over the guys in front of him.

OK, so back on April 20th I graciously admitted I may have been wrong about how Neifi would be used, but now it's May 14th and Neifi has started 5 of the last 7 games, so now I will ungraciously unadmit that I may have been unwrong.

Its kind of like a kid who has a nightmare and goes back to sucking his thumb. As soon as things go south, Dusty runs to his security blanket.
