I remember reading where Kerry Wood threw a huge number of pitches ina high school game. Not sure if this is right, but the number 250 is in my head.

Mizzou lost to SE Missouri St. tonight, 9-5. SEMO's pitcher, Asif Shah, threw a complete game, and threw ONE HUNDRED NINETY THREE PITCHES. 1-9-3. Congratulations Asif, here's Dr. Andrews' phone number.

Well, he's Indian. Our arms are built tough. Or something.

High school coaches have no clue on how to manage a high school pitcher. Its sad because they are ruining kids arms do to the fact they have no clue on mechanics. I know a kid who pitched 11 innings and threw over 200 pitches. This kid im talking about never was the same. He played on varisty but hurt his shoulder do to the fact he ruined his shoulder throwing so many pitches because of some sophmore coach who wanted to beat a rival. Unbelievable.

I don't think you can make a blanket statement like that. Granted, some don't have a clue but a lot do know what they are doing.

Not sure about that. Considering im a pitcher i know how to pitch with proper mechanics. From what i see i noticed most high school coaches dont know how to teach pitchers the right mechanics.

You do realize that you have been talking to a HS coach, right?

yeah I think he realizes that. He was just a pitcher that threw 175 pitches in one game and our high school coach left him in while he was, obviously, real tired. Our HS had a coach that really did not know much about the game of baseball as he tried telling pitchers other ways to throw while messing up their mechanics. He resigned a few games ago and the freshman baseball coach became the varisty coach. He coached a 41-1 loss with the freshman team and he somehow got promoted.

needless to say, I think most HS coaches know what they are doing because they are in a somewhat high level of baseball. Unfortunately, for our school, the coaches that we have don't have a clue what is going on out there.

I've seen some coaches without a clue win and I've seen some really good coaches lose 32-2 because they just don't have any talent. The thing most HS coaches don't know about is catching IMO with pitching a far second.

Agreed, I am a pitching coach for a large high school in the Milwaukee area. I have a staff of 5 starters 2 middle relief/spot starters and a closer. I will not let my pitchers go over 100 and they have to rest 4 days before pitching again. Furthermore each kid that starts a game will not play a position the next game. (we play 6 games per week)

I do see abuse, last year in the Regional game a kid threw 205 and lost it on a bases loaded walk 4-3. Amazing the coach never pulled him :(

I think a lot of coaches know what they're doing... but unfortunately, they're more focused on winning any given game with their best pitcher on the mound than about the potential effects that driving that pitcher into the ground will have on his career thereafter.

don't remember the exact number, but his hs coach let him pitch both games of a double header because it was the state championship. the reports were that ed lynch destroyed his office after hearing that one.
