Neifi to start at second tomorrow

Wow, Greg "Home Run" Maddux, Neifi and Blanco in the lineup? Maybe I'll just skip the whole game. This could get real ugly.

Just to let everybody know, the Score 670 was saying that Neifi is starting at 2nd tomorrow, and yes he IS batting 2nd. Dusty hasnt learned a damn thing. So much for trying to utilize Pierres speed cause when Perez swings at the first pitch and hits into another one of his dp's it Juans speed wont matter. Neifi might not have been a great second baseman last year, but he was arguably the best defenseive SS in the league last year. Good range, got fielding percentage, few errors.

I'm just not as suprised as some people in Dusty's decision making. I'm ok with Neifi in the line-up,occasionally. The problem is he should never hit higher than 7th due to his frequency to GIDP.

Although I hate Neifi starting games as much as you do, the fact that Neifi will always play 9 innings (when he starts) is not particularly surprising. Nor is it damning of Baker.

 

If you believe -- as I do -- that Neifi's proper role on this team is to serve only as a defensive replacement for Walker in the late innings of games that the Cubs lead, why would you take him out of the game at that point when he does start?

 

Clearly, he should never start. But in the games that he does start, why do you expect (or want) Baker to compound the problem by removing Perez from the game just at the point where he might contribute?

These are NOT the type of characteristics you want hitting 2nd in your line up. Ever. Period.

 

2nd is also not where you hide a guy in your line up when they have these characteristics.

For those of you wanting something other than ESPN 1000... it now says that Neifi will start on the Cubs homepage.

 

Still not 100% proof, but considering he did it over and over and over again last year, I have no reason to believe he wouldn't do it again this year.

#12 in over 100 years of suckage batting 2nd. Sounds about right for this franchise.

Batting 2nd doesn't really matter. Batting order has been shown to not really affect runs scored over the long haul. What matters is who is in the lineup. And Neifi has no business being in any lineup.

 

Best case scenario is he has a fluke couple games when he does start, but that Dusty doesn't turn those fluke good games into the scores of terrible games by playing him every day. Neifi had a great April last year. But he sucked overall, and his non-April numbers were depressingly terrible.

There is no difference between Neifi batting 2nd or 8th in the lineup according to Bill James. :wink:

 

The only thing that matters is whether or not Neifi plays or not. he's going to play. Get over it.

Isn't there a new book that contradicts that notion? I believe its called "The Book" but i'm drawing a blank. I remember the gist of it is, your best batters should be placed first, second, and fourth, then next best batters third and fifth.
