Believe it or not, thats what BP's numbers say in their new book, exerpted by ESPN.com

Hmm, I do remember a bunch of clutch hits, but that somewhat suprises me.

I believe it. He's not my favorite as a person, but after all the rallies he set up that Sosa whiffed down, I was VERY happy for Grace for starting the rally to win the WS.

Grace also led baseball in the 90's in hits and Doubles.

I doubt that gets him into the HOF, though. The numbers just aren't quite there. Maybe on offense + his glove, but I don't think D is respected as much for a 1B than for middle IF (Sandberg, Ozzie Smith).

Given that this is true, it only stands to reason that he would also be good in "clutch" situations as those numbers tend to mirror career numbers.

Who lead all of baseball in hits and doubles from 1993 to 2002?

I really hate the arbitrary, lead the 90s in hits stat that's always tossed around. It's a selected 10 year period that just happens to coincide with Grace's prime. How many players even have a chance at contending for that?

i'm surprised keith hernandez isn't on this list. during the time MLB kept a stat for game-winning RBI, he was the leader in that category. granted, i don't know what crazy math equation the guys at BP used to make their "best clutch hitter ever" statistic, but i would think that hernandez would be on that list somewhere because of the GW RBI stat used way back when.

I'm surprised Moises Alou isn't on the list. He's been a clutch hitter his whole career. Do those stats include the playoffs? And another note, it doesn't surprise me Grace is at the top because he had more opportunities since his team often down late in the game.
