Mitre is no Willis. He has had ample time in the majors for the Cubs to know he is no star. He had some good starts with us also. I wish him the best, but don't worry about it. He's just not that good.

Whoa hello everybody. I'm back and I have survived the collapse that was the Cubs' last season. Hopefully this won't happen again.

I can't believe Sergio Mitre is a #2 now. That is crazy. Go cubs!!!

Mitre was amazing tonight. The Cubs lost another front line starting pitcher. Ok...maybe I'm exaggerating, a lot. I wasn't all that impressed. He threw strikes and the Astros didn't hit them. Kudos to him. The Astro hitters were not relaxed tonight. If you're into fantasy baseball, I wouldn't count on Mitre putting up those kind of numbers very often. The past two seasons, the Astros have been wretched in April. That trend may continue.

Which clearly explains why the CUBS won't see them until 05 June !!!

I am not going to predict that Mitre will be great or even good, but in my opinion he never got a fair shot with the Cubs. He would pitch well and have a blow up inning and then get a start a month later. Some of that probably has to do with the talent of the Cubs pitching.

The Astros aren't exactly the 1927 Yankees when it comes to offense. Let's wait a couple of months before we put Mitre in the "Dontrelle Willis" category. I do think that Mitre can be a decent #3 or #4 starter though.

I just saw this headline on my gmail account:

"Pettitte gives up 10 runs as young Marlins rout Astros"

ok, so Mitre had a good night. But I think the reall happy news is Pettitte sucks...

Nice to know Rick Kranitz can change Mitre's mechanics in a couple of months and Larry Rotchschild has no freaking clue. Mitre looked solid last night against the Astros. He had the Astors hitter off balnce the entire game. He was throwing that heavy sinker down and in on right handers. Wonder if Rick Krantiz could of helped change Kerry's mechanics. Probably could help him from throwing across his body, which causes the shoulder to flare up all the time.

The only reason the Mtre trade was bad was b/c we gave up too much for Pierre alone. Had it been any two of the three we traded I wouldn't have raised an eyebrow. We have a lot of potential in terms of starting pitchers; Mitre had no place here.

And how about letting him pitch a full season in the majors before annointing him the pitching version of Lou Brock.

He always seemed to have Maddox like talent, remember Greg struggled for a while and never really became a star until he moved to Atlanta, Hew throws a little harder than maddox did but the same type of pitcher, I see Metre becoming a good pitcher for a long time, and becoming a Cub nemisis

I think thats nuts personally. He hasnt shown that he was that good when he was in our system and now because he had one good start for the marlin you think he has the stuff to be a Greg Maddux in the future thats a little outlandish.

Mitre did have back to back quality starts against the Marlins and BlueJays last year. He out pitched Roy Halladay that day, and Halladay is one hell of a pitcher.

1) Maddux won the Cy Young as a Cub.

2) Mitre doesn't have near Maddux's control.

3) I think people are going a little overboard in their predictions for Mitre after only one start for Florida. He had a few awesome, but random starts for the Cubs too.

Thank you

and he got a win against a big game in his career I give him credit don't get me wrong, but hes no where near maddux control or talent wise.

Can anyone honestly say that they knew who Dontrelle Willis was when we traded him - and that he would turn out to be valuable major leaguer? I'm not about to. I was happy to add Clement and Alfonseca. We needed a closer and it turned out Clement was a very good starter. A year or two later Willis has a great rookie year. I'm so tired of hearing about how we could let him go to Florida. He was an 18 year old rookie baller who pitched in exactly 9 games for us.

Alfonseca sucked. He had one year where he racked up 45 saves, but didn't pitch great at all. He was a closer in name only. And Clement, was, remained and still is a walk machine who cannot be counted on. I used to follow the minors more then and was starting to like Dontrelle around that time. I didn't predict he'd be a Cy Young candidate by now, but I sure as heck had no interest trading away young talent to add those marginal veteran (expensive) upgrades to what was nothing more than a mediocre team still a couple years away from potential greatness. And I thought he had a very good chance to be a valuable major leaguer. Yes, I knew who he was, and no I didn't "know" he'd make it, but I liked his chances.

While it's revisionism to say you knew Willis would be great, it's just as revisionist to suggest nobody knew who he was.

what, did Kranitz find a clue in the offseason? because he had plenty of opportunity to fix Mitre's mechanics in the past before this year.

Kranitz was pitching coach for the Cubs' Triple-A Iowa affiliate the past two seasons.

it was one game. don't read too much into it. however, I don't remember Serge's changeup being as nasty or used as often as I saw last night.

Sergio was one of my favorite players. I would like to see him succeed!

Gooooooooo MITRE!!!

I just can't root against him just because he's no longer on the Cubs. It shhould be mentioned though that the Astros have a terrible offense.

I don't think its revisionist - its probably an overstatement though. Accordingly, I think you'd agree that few knew who Willis was prior to the trade. I'd also add that he jumped from AA; I don't think he ever played a game at AAA.

Few fans might have known, but that doesn't excuse the baseball people working for the Cubs for not knowing. The Marlins asked specifically for Willis. Somebody knew something.

I really ddiin't think much about it at the time as I read that his winde up was hard to repeat and he was prone to arm injuries. But the numbers were there, and he appeared to be a pretty decent prospect.

For some reason it seems to me the only reason he was singled out was because he was a lefty, not because he was considered superior to some of the others (Guzman, for example). I just don't remember where I heard/read that.
