Why the heck is Greenberg in AA again? WTH?

Because he'd be at a corner OF spot in AAA? I really don't know. I'd think swapping Coats and Greenberg would make sense for the players and the teams.

Too much chaff at Iowa. Who is Jamal Strong, anyway?

He was one of the players to test positive for performance-enhancing drugs with the Mariners. He played a few of the Cactus League games on WGN. CFer, I believe, with no power. He's been in AAA or the majors for three years already.

Strong was signed from the Seatle organization. He is a AAA Of I believe. I know he was suspended for roids last year. I believe he was a 6 year FA pick up. Batted 1.000 for the big Cubs in ST.

Isn't he the guy that Len was referring to as the mystery man last weekend?

He's certainly managed to put up a good OBP in AAA. But 79 doubles and 11 HR in 2151 career at bats is really unimpressive. Even a slap hitter with speed should get enough balls up the lines to get more doubles than that. He seems really redundant in the system with Pagan, though.

Looks like a nice leadoff option for Iowa, though.

I assume that the players in bold are going to be the starters. The fifth starter in the rotation is probably Cherry, but I'm not sure about that one. That leaves the starting pitching weaker than in recent years, but the bullpen should be strong with some older, experienced arms in there.

I'm really surprised that Rojas is going to be there at SS.

How did Gary Cates make this roster? And when did we get him?

Lewis seems to have fallen out of favor pretty quickly.

I guess this also means Nate Spears will be repeating A+ ball.

I recall Cash being mentioned as a possible starter.

Yes he was. I believe Kasper said he switched numbers..

Thus far, it seems all news is bad.

Pawelek is too wildman to make full-season.

Billek not good enough for A+

Fox not good enough to make AA.

Blasko and Connolly aren't healthy enough/good enough for AA. If Blasko isn't ready 22 months after surgery, how likely that more time will ever get him to 100%?

Shaver isn't good enough for AA.

Burrows isn't good enough for AA.

Fuld isn't good enough for AA.

Jackson isn't good enough/healthy enough.

Who knows how a season will really go. WTenn's staff of journeyman middle-late 20's pitchers may be better than some staffs with more prospects.

But it seems that when the 2nd and 3rd best arms/pitching prospects are Randy Wells and Juan Mateo, this doesn't come close to many previous years in terms of exciting prospects.

Wow. Richard Lewis from AA MVP (right? I know he was a AA all-star selection) to a AA backup in 2 years.

Yep, that's him.

Lewis seems to have fallen out of favor pretty quickly.

Cates must have come from the O's as either part of the Patterson trade or as compensation for that reliever that retired soon after being traded in the Sosa deal.

Cates has spent parts of the last 4 seasons at Low A Delmarva due to some injuries. Thus he's too old for Daytona but not experienced enough for AAA where he could supplant Augie as the utility Inf roster filler guy. It was either that or release him which would be no great loss but the Cubs probably like his versatility.

Interesting note: Cates beat out Brian Roberts at 2nd base for the Delamrva 10 year anniversay team (which included Michael Barrett and Havier Vasquez).
