Would you rather have Maddux once he retires as a Manager or Pitching Coach? That is if he goes in to that portion of the game. i think either way it would be a win win situation. Pionions and thoughts please.

So what makes you think the Cubs are going to be needing a new manager?

My choice: Manager. Maddux is smart. He would do well with either job, but the weakest link appears to be at the Manager's position.

Both will be fine... as long as he comes back. But, since he has such a great mind devoted to pitching, I think he should come back as a pitching coach. He can do either, but pitching coach is my suggestion.

This is pointless as Maddux has all but held a press conference to openly state that he has no desire to be a manager or coach after he is done.

If he WERE to be interested, I'd love to have him as pitching coach.

Pitching coach.

He is so good at it that no matter who the pitching coach is they will be virtually ignored. I also cant see him not working with pitchers making the pitching coaches job more difficult if he were a manager.

Do we have any evidence that Greg is any good at teaching/instructing/coaching? Sometimes guys are gifted with talent and a keen mind but cannot really help others use their own gifts or help them get better. I know people were calling him "The Professor" when he came back to the Cubs but I just wonder if his ability to influence younger ptichers in the clubhouse isn't more by example than actual instruction or coaching.

I've seen numerous articles over the years where some of Maddux's more accomplished former teammates have stated he's helped them alot with various things, including pitches, pitching strategy, and even mechanics. One good example would be Tom Glavine.

there are plenty of reports of this during his current tenure with the cubs, even.

i think maddux would probably be a fine pitching coach. it seems like he wants to keep pitching after this year, though, i think.

I thought I heard that pitchers don't generally make good managers. I think that's why LA was apprehensive about giving the managing job to Orel.

Interesting that the Dodgers would be apprehensive, because they recently had a former pitcher that wasn't too shabby as a manager. Guy by the name of Tommy LaSorda. :D

Yeah, and Hillary has said she's not interested in seeking the Presidency.

Politicians are liars. Maddux isnt a politician.

Maybe he's practicing. Jim Bunning was a Hall-of-Fame pitcher who later became a US Senator; maybe Maddux is planning to do the same thing. :D

Unlike other players that come back to coach,I believe Maddux doesn't have to.I think he has enough money to retire and play golf everyday.

I would rather have Maddux as a pitching coach than as a starter....

Maddux continues to be the least of this team's problems.

If I pity anyone in the 3-year-scenario, it's Maddux, not the Cobs.

Pity Maddux? He is making a pretty penny here pitching so I definitely do not pity him or his situation.
