The papers are saying he's put his best foot fwd, but it does not seem like they are seriously considering him as a potential no. 5. Can someone with greater knowledge of his history tell me why? Or is it b/c of his shoulder troubles of last year?

IMO, he hasn't earn the job, simply because this is a small sample size in SPRING TRAINING (scrubs supreme). Marshall has given Baker/Hendry a good impression about what he can do (and Marshall has leapfrogged Hill as the first pitcher to be call up during the season), but Sean still needs at least a strong half yr at AAA before he is ready.

If he needs half a year at AAA, he might not be ahead of Hill. Last I read, Marshall was likely headed back to AA to start the season. That might change though if he keeps performing like he has.

I still think it is too early to say who is ahead of who to be the 5th starter or the first one called up. But even if Marshall is at AA and Hill is at AAA, I don't think it will matter much who is at the higher level. The Cubs decision will likely be based on who they think is throwing better at the time.

A lot can (and will) happen in the next 3+weeks, so this decision is impossible right now. Marshall's arm might fall off on April 13th.

An odd twist on the battle for the 5th starter spot:

chicagosports.com[/url]"]If Jae Kuk Ryu makes the team as a long man in the bullpen, that leaves Rich Hill, Sean Marshall and Angel Guzman to compete for the fifth-starter's spot. Baker said the Cubs likely will send one of the candidates to Double-A and a couple to Triple-A so they all can be on similar schedules to start April 15. Marshall has made only 10 career starts at the Double-A level.

"If it's between two guys, we can work it out at Triple-A (Iowa), more or less," pitching coach Larry Rothschild said.

I think that's smoke up our butts and the decision will rest on the point alluded to above re: delaying free agency. your fifth starer will be Mr. Rich Hill.

That's only if you believe the organization still view Hill as a starter---which I don't. The feeling I get is that while they do love his "curveball" the organization---like it's fans---are still confused as to where to put Hill---starter or reliever. Personally, I see Hill as a reliever, seeing as his stuff is hardly starter quality---notwithstanding the curve.

Agreed. Alot of fans only want to see the "hyped prospects" instead of the "right prosepcts" and that is not a smart decision. If Marshall is pitching better then Hill by the end of April and the Cubs need him...so be it, or vice versa.

but that's it. i don't know if we had still had dontrelle willis, that he'd be on the team right now. i thought it was try to play the best player everytime, not the best player in that position in the lineup. if that were the philosophy, sean marshall is that player right now.

How old was Z when he came up and stayed on the Cubs? How much experience in the minors did he have? I'd like to see one of these kids get into the rotation.

true. but even then, who was thought of to be the real prospect and the relief guy between he and cruz?

in hindsight, i wonder if the cubs wish they would have taken texeria instead of prior.

No. You can find guys like Texieria---not necessarily switch-hitting---who can hit a ton to stick at first base. But guys like Prior don't come to your organization that often. So I doubt the Cubs "regret" not taking Tex.

Not that this is a big deal, but the quote you attributed to me above was not something that I wrote. Just for the record.

On the other hand, both Z and Cruz were thought of more highly than Ryu, Marshall, Hill or Guzman are right now.

Marshall has looked good, but it's a real small sample. One bad game and he no longer looks like the best thing since sliced bread. Looks like he needs at least one more quality start before anyone can seriously refer to his performances as "earning" anything other than a closer look.

Fixed, and sorry for that.
