RETIRING TYPE: Baker said it's up to shortstop Ronny Cedeno to improve his pitch selection. During a spotty spring at the plate, Cedeno's basic problem has been that he is getting himself out.

"They're not getting Ronny out,'' Baker said. "Ronny is getting Ronny out. The whole thing is pitch selection. He's been over-aggressive swinging at low-percentage pitches.''

I thought the bolded quote was funny because it perfectly describes Neifi's whole career. Of course you'll never hear Dusty mention that.

Well, the quote is true.

I'd love to hear Dusty give the same criticism to deserving veterans. His double standard, however, will ensure that never happens.

I really don't think Dusty is laying the groundwork for anything. He's been actually pretty supportive of Cedeno it seems like this spring - and he's just trying to give him some pointers.

Through the media?

Agreed, I don't remember his quotes when Lenny Harris was the starting 3B, and I'd love to see them, but I am sure when Lenny was hitting .120 with a .350 OPS, Dusty was saying something like he was hitting well, but his hits were going to fielders too often, so he just had bad luck and needed to play through it.

I think we all know what Neifi is and what he's capable of. The standard is higher for Cedeno. It'd worry me more if Dusty didn't ride him a little. It sounds like he actually cares how the kid does.

Cedeno really has been playing like crap. Neifi would be a huge improvement, both defensively and offensively from what I've seen so far in ST. However, it's only 23 AB. His throws to 1B are more of a concern.

Believe me, I'm not a fan of Baker AT ALL, but whose to say he hasn't said the same things to Ronny? He may have answered a question he was asked by the media - but he very well could have already given these pointers and feedback to Ronny before this Q and A.

Cedeno was the freaking rookie of the year in his league this winter. All he has done is hit since working with Vaughn Joshua. A handfull of ABs in spring training will not change the fact that Neifi isn't a good alternative. If they don't like Cedeno, fine, but find someone else to fill the position.

Cedeno is pressing, that is obvious. Instead of pointing out that Dusty should say something like, "Ronny is my guy. Look, the kid hit lights out this winter and last year he was on fire in AAA. I'm not worried about Ronny. I think his main problem is he is trying a little too hard. A few ABs this spring isn't going to change the fact that this kid is a good young player."

In the interest of fairness Dusty did say something about Murton and Cedeno being too serious. Well Dusty, I would be damn serious if I too were trying to break in the majors with a club managed by you.

If I remember correctly, he said he's not worried about Murton and Cedeno - he knows they will hit, Cedeno is just pressing right now.

It's clear to me that he's looking out for Ronny and trying to help him.

I think no matter WHAT Dusty does here, he's fate is sealed with the fans, which is fine. I wish he was gone too, but he DID say he wasn't worried about Ronny.

I have been a little busy, and out of the Cubs loop lately, so I have what may be a ridiculous question. Has there been any word on who will be the starting SS come opening day?

I don't think there's been any sort of indication that it will be anyone other than Ronny.

Ronny Cedeno will be the starting shortstop on Opening Day. Baker, in fact, has been very supportive of both him and Murton, talking to both constantly. If you read the whole, quote, as it appeared in the Daily Herald (shameless plug), you'll see that Baker ended it by saying something to the effect that Ronny "will do it."

Thanks Bruce. Not the first time posters have ignored the whole story, and only focused on the part that fits their agenda.

Isn't this the truth.

Thanks Bruce for quieting the "sky is falling" pessimists who take everything out of context and/or ignore proceedings that contradict their points.

I hadn't seen the Herald version of the quote when I started the thread. I posted the whole quote from the suntimes article by Mike Kiley, so if you have a beef about agendas take it to Kiley.

What adgenda is that?

It is about time for this stuff to stop. Only time will tell what Dusty will do.

I don't know if it's an "agenda" but I'd qualify it as a propensity to misrepresent stories and quotes to fit one's viewpoint.

Why? Every word should be viewed the same way by everyone based on how you view it, otherwise it's a propensity to misrepresent stories and quotes to fit one's viewpoint?

I see nothing wrong with people reading something and making their own judgments as to the meaning.

The reason stuff like this pops up is because the Neifi Chicken Little posts pop up in a ridiculous number of threads. Until people let the bloated, rotting horse rest, others will attempt to temper the conversation.

So when you say it's about time for this stuff to stop, I hope you also include the ungodly number of "well it looks like Neifi is the starting X position guy again" comments as well.

Seriously, I'm not going to get into this with you. Suffice to say, if Hendry or Baker say anything, it's twisted negatively by certain people and if people they like say something, it's twisted positively. That is ALL I am going to say on this.

That's my OPINION on the postcontent with respect to commentary on Hendry, but more so Baker.

There was nothing in the quote even in the Kiley article to suggest that Cedeno was getting demoted, but it didn't take long for the sky to start falling, thankfully someone who everyone on this board respects put that story straight (Bruce)
