Anyone have information on the status of Minor Leaguer Bo Flowers? There are rumors he is going to play college football -- possibly at Marshall. Anyone in the know?

You might post this question in the Nathan Boliva Q & A thread. He's been at Spring Training (I'm not sure if he still is), so he might know.

Nope. Chris Weinke (FSU), J.R. House (WVU) and others have done it after playing minor league baseball. If they had played pro football it would be a different story.

Well, UBlink, last I checked being able to go from Minor League Baseball to college football is not a problem. Several people have done it. Chad Hutchinson, the QB who went to Stanford and played for the Cowboys, went from the minors to college football. I beleive Quincy Carter did too.

I know for a fact JR House went from the Pirates' minor league system to WVU, and now has given up football for baseball (Astros) once again.

Not to mention Matt Mauck, who was a catcher in the Cubs system for a few years. After a couple of bad seasons at Lansing, he went back to LSU to play QB. Last I saw, he was on the Titans roster.

Cedric Benson did both, played for the Dodgers and played football for Texas. I don't think it's a problem.

That's because he got a bigger signing bonus with Texas and could afford to do both.

Haha, that probably didn't hurt

I don't think Colleges can give bonuses and such to students/players.

You're right...they're not.

And also Quincy Carter, who played college football at Georgia while he was in the Cubs' minor league system.

Ivy Leaugue is an exception - see Chris Young (the pitcher) - but last time I checked Marshall is not in the Ivy Leaugue.
As often as they've switched conferences, they may have switched to the Ivy League since the last time you checked.

Bo was playing on Monday on Daytona's field when I was there. Didnt talk to him too much other than to shake hands, say hi how are you and best of luck this season. I hadn't heard anything else. I'll see if I can get some more info this week.

FYI: Quan Cosby who was a freshman wide reciever for the National Champion Texas Longhorns this year played against us in Cedar Rapids in 2003 and 2004....and Tim Lemon who was on the Chiefs from 2001-2004 is currently heading into his soph season at Colorado so it is possible...

I think the difference between playing minor league baseball and Jeremy Bloom was that Bloom's money was coming from endorsements which is illegal in the eyes of the NCAA.

I think I read somewhere Nike was one of Bloom's sponsors which would cause some problems. I think I read somewhere too, that Tim Dwight, former Iowa football player, had to pay back some of his endorsements from going to the NFL in order to run track at Iowa after the draft.

Because these minor league players are making money in a sport different then their NCAA sport and not getting endorsement money, makes it OK to do, I guess.

Ricky Williams played minor league ball for the Phillies, saving Texas the scholarship - not that the thread really needed more examples to prove whether it was allowed. Just a nice opportunity to mention #34.

Someone should tell that to Ohio State.

It turned out to be only that, a rumor. A former HS QB from Chicago who went on to play minor league baseball is supposed to be enrolled at Marshall. That's how Bo's name got mentioned, because he fit that mold.
