The second Cedeno struggles he'll never be seen again. IMO, this is why Perez hasn't been mentioned in the 2nd base race, he's going to be the starting SS.

Wait, what? Everything I've seen has talked about Walker, Hairston, and Perez all battling for the job.

I've seen some stuff that includes Perez, but probably just as many that ignore him as a candidate.

What I meant was just what you wrote, Perez hasn't been mentioned as many times as Walker and Hairston. Plus after how the Cubs feel about Perez and what he did for them I'd be shocked if he doesn't play in at least 140 games and start at SS. Add to that if Mabry keeps making errors at 3rd Perez will be the backup there too, yeah it's early but Mabry is getting up there in years.

Well, he definitely should be ignored as a candidate, that's for sure. But everything I've read on the Cubs website has talked about all three of them.

hendry has publicly stated that neifi is not an everyday player - saying he'll play 140 games is stretching it, i think. i really hope that if dusty tried to put him in the lineup every day, hendry would step in.

We will see and again I hope I'm wrong.

If Neifi and Cedeno play at the same time, why should Neifi play second and not Cedeno?Cedeno may have better range but he is not close glove wise to Neifi.People who want Cedeno to play everyday are going to have to accept alot of errors and few walks.

Cedeno made 12 errors in 65 games at AAA last year.Neifi made 10 in 130 games last year.Neifi has a .978 career fielding % at short. He was .982 last year tied for 2nd in the NL.

I also believed Neifi would be the starting SS but I'm not 100% sure now. It very well could still turn out that way but Neifi can shuffle around the infield and get something very close to starter's playing time, so he doesn't really need to be a designated starter at any one position to save the Cubs again. Obviously if Cedeno has a bad April Neifi takes over fulltime at SS, and IMO it's a given that Neifi gets 50 starts at SS unless Cedeno puts up ARod numbers.

are you saying that errors and fielding percentage are legitimate defensive metrics? come on.

cedeno is a very good fielder (though neifi was quite good last year, as well). however, cedeno is going to provide a lot more runs from the offensive standpoint - quite a bit more, i suspect, than neifi would provide over cedeno on defense.

Come one....you can't be that ignorant. Do you REALIZE who was playing first base at Iowa? Scott McClain, that's who. Now admitting, I like McClain, but he isn't what I would consider a strong defender. And I am willing to bet there were a few plays he could had come up to prevent some errors. Cedeno didn't have a Derrek Lee at AAA, while Nefti did. Now while, I do consider Nefti a very good defender, Cedeno is as good, IF NOT BETTER then Perez defensively.

So don't even use the X numbers of errors in X number of games theory to justify sayin Nefti is a better defensive SS, cause you would be wrong.

Fielding percentage is a terrible, terrible way of determining defensive aptitude.

A perfect example of this was Ernie Banks. He said a record for fielding at SS and everyone knew he wasn't a great SS.

Cedeno is great fielding the ball. It's his throws that aren't accurate.

his throws tail in to the runner, remember?

I think that was some Dusty bs, but Cedeno does have accuracy problems. Great arm strength though.

This is totally my opinion, but I would not be surprised if Hendry may be putting his foot down on playing Cedeno with Baker. From what I read, Hendry seems committed to wanting to see the young players in the lineup. If Baker decides to not play them, then that may be a trigger for Baker to get fired.

Again, this is entirely my impression and not based on any solid evidence.

This might be what Freud calls wish fulfillment. And I really hope it happens!

A low error total and a high fielding % shows the ability to make the routine play consistently. It obviously doesn't reflect range, turning 2 etc.Cedeno deserves the chance to show what he can do.but he has made quite a few errors, many throwing. What I was suggesting was that if Neifi and Cedeno were on the field at the same time ,I would probably slide Cedeno to 2nd.But, if I got Cedeno at short, why would I put Neifi out there over Walker or Hairston.Neifi should not even be considered for 2nd.
