I'm glad baseball has finally decided to crack down on these things. Amphetamine abuse has probably been far more rampant in baseball than steroids ever were, both in terms of number of players using and how long they've been around. (Willie Mays and Pete Rose are just two high-profile players rumored to have habitually turned to red juice or greenies for a pre-game pick-me-up.)

At this atge, anything less than Olympic style testing is a disappointment.

True, but some testing is always better than no testing.

Even if the penalties aren't that harsh, having penalties installed in the first place makes it easier to make them more harsh in the future. It took MLB long enough to finally get testing that we should be happy they have it in the first place.

I wonder how banning greenies will affect the length of MLB careers. Players say they give you a quicker bat, and when players get old they need all the bat speed they can get. I'm guessing we might see a big reduction in the number of players over 35 who can catch up to a good fastball.

While I have little doubt there are plenty of players who have used amphetemines to gain an edge, I get skeptical when a player confesses to taking a drug and then turns around indicts the rest of the league with some inflated percentage. It reminds me of players like Ken Caminitti and Jose Canseco. He's being honest, but it also sounds like he is trying to rationalize his behavior with the "everybody does it" defense. Lot's of players may do it, but his viewpoint is distorted.

That said, I'm glad they are testing for uppers along with roids.

If I were a stock market guy, I'd buy shares in Red Bull because that will be the choice of drink now more than already was in MLB.

Or just energy drinks in general because everybody has their own personal preference.
