Would anyone do a package like Williamson, Walker, and Murton for Pat Burrell?

I'd consider that package, but the Phillies have no need of Walker. They'd probably want Williams. I'm not sure I'd trade Williamson, Murton, and Williams for Burrell considering Burrell's salary.

And while I see Philly as a team that might be looking for a closer, they currently are paying a boatload of money to newly signed Tom Gordon to be just that. My guess is that Philly isn't in the market for a closer until Gordon has proven he can't do the job. My guess is, even if he looks bad this spring, Philly will let him have the job for a month or so before trying to pull the plug on him.

Do the Phillies have a decent set up man for Gordon? If not, Williamson would fit that roll nicely and be the back up closer if Gordon falters.

I might look at Baltimore for a Williamson for Matos deal if we could get it done. If Williamson looks good for us and Hidalgo looks productive for the Orioles, they may decide that Matos is expendable.

Another place I might look is Pittsburgh and explore a Williamson for Craig Wilson deal. Wilson would make a great platoon partner for Jones. Hell, Wilson would make a better everyday player than Jones.

Atlanta makes the most sense, but other than prospects have nothing they can spare that the Cubs need except for prospects. Now if the Cubs can acquire prospects from the Braves that they can spin elsewhere for something of use, then it could happen.

That would be dreadful.

I'd still look for Tejada to be coming. A good package of pitching and prospects and a 2b man could be the way it goes.

A 2B? Why? Where did Hairston come from again?

It's going to take premium ML talent to get Tejada, and not just a RP like Williamson. We're talking Prior or Z, which I find unacceptable.

I'd trade Walker and Williamson for Fonzie, if Washington equalizes the salaries (would require roughly $2.5MM cash). I'm not a huge Fonzie fan, but he does bring SLG and SB, you can hit him 5th or 6th, where he'd have value, and the 2 slot in the lineup would be opened up for Murton (who I think will be an ideal 2 hitter).

We know Soriano's defense will stink, but no worse than Walkers. His OBP is lousy, but not so much of an issue if he hits down in the order. OTOH, those 30 HR, 90 RBI, and 30 SB, Walker can't produce those numbers. I'll take them.

That might be ok as Walker's gone next year anyway and we probably won't have the money to keep williamson if he's lights out anyway (or room with Dempster, Eyre, and Howry).

I'm not sure Washington would want Walker, seeing as they want Soriano to move to LF. They'd probably also prefer a starting pitcher, since they just lost Brian Lawrence for a good chunk of the season (if not the whole season).

Walker made it clear when he came to Chicago that he would gladly play LF if that's where the team wanted him.

That doesn't mean he's actually good enough to do it. I'm not saying he couldn't, but I've only seen him out there for an inning. It wouldn't be wise to trade for someone, expecting them to play a position they have next to no experience at playing. Of course, we are talking about Jim Bowden here. Surely even he wouldn't make the same mistake twice in the same offseason. No, no, he probably would.
