How many shortstops are hitting 300 in the majors?

3, and Jack Wilson ain't one of them. Last year, he was 19th among qualified SS with a 299 OBP. Neifi was 20th at 298.

Fine. You take Neffi, we'll take Jack.

You can take them both.

Let's just see how Jack Wilson does now that he is off the 'roids. :D

I don't think he was on the juice, he's always been a small guy. Look at B. Boone to see what roids can do to a normally short-of-stature guy.

As i said many times , when i was being a Nefi apologist. This era (post steroid) is going to emphasize defense much more at premium positons. ss-cf-c. Thats why i argued Nefis salary was not that out of line. It looks like a bargain next to Wilsons, who is an outstanding defender. I feel the cubs are acutually covered pretty well up the middle. Its going to be tougher to put together defense and high ops at those positions. It will come at a premium. (see frucal) thanks Coach L

I wasn't being serious, hence the smiley face at the end of my post.

I thought I heard on XM that it was somewhere in the neighborhood of three years, $20 million

I'm confident that Cedeno will get a .300 OBP for chump change.

First, I have no illusion he's going to be a 300 hitter, and I've said as much. Normally, based on the number, I'd agree with you. After his surgery, he couldn't swing a bat for months, and this extended into the season. After May, his average slowly rose through out the season. I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but I think he hit .283 over the last four months of the season. Being healthy all year, and looking at his numbers, he's going to hit .280- .290. And play stellar defense.

He's only hit above .260 once in his career. I don't know how you can expect him to hit .280-.290 this year.

Take away april and may of last year, and he basically hit 280 over the past two years. He was essentially hurt at the start of last season. He's improved every year he's been in the majors. It's not that far of a reach.

Take away Neifi's worst two months last year, and he hit over .300. If you can do that for Jack, you have to do that for everyone.

I'd much rather have Neifi for 2.5 (which is steep) than Jack for $5+. It looks like they're going to pay him more than Bay over the next 3 years. Wilson's career line of .263/.304/.368/.672 looks awfully similar to Neifi's .270/.301/.380/.681 career line. Neifi's cheaper and plays better defense.

Maybe we can help the Pirates with their contract issues. We can send them Perez for Craig Wilson and they can work a deal sending Jack Wilson to some team for prospects. We just saved them at least $6-7 million per year, they still have a good defense-no hit SS, and we have a platoon RF who wasn't going to start for the Pirates anyhow. A little fine tuning (extra players) and it's a deal.
