I wouldn't mind seeing Sing given a shot - he's been pretty impressive offensively in Daytona and West Tennessee. Anything would be better than the .247/.370/.617 line that Jones put up against lefties last year.

.247/.370/.617? That looks fantastic.

Wait, what three stats are you comparing in that line? Usually it's AVG/OBP/SLG

Sign that man to a three year contract now! Don't let him get away, Jim!!!!

It doesn't sound like the Cubs are going to platoon Jones, even though it makes a lot of sense.

It's really confusing why they wouldn't. It's not like you have to refer to obscure stats to see he's bad against LHP.

His 3 yr BATTING AVERAGE is .238. I know Hendry/Baker understand that stat. Why are they willing to ignore it?

I know it's been pointed out before, but with the unbalanced schedule, if Jones doesn't sit vs lefties, the Cubs could be in for some painful numbers from RF.

The Reds have three left-handed starters.

The Astros have two left-handed starters.

The Brewers have two left-handed starters.

The Pirates have three left-handed starters.

The Cards, thank goodness, only have one lefty starter.

Do the Reds and Pirates really each have three lefties in their rotation? That's not exactly common. Who are they?

5 different lefties will start for Pitt this year. Duke, Maholm, O. Perez, Gorezellany, and Burnett. Although, probably only 3 will be there opening day.

Cincy has Milton, Dave Williams, and Claussen. A who's who of LH pitching......or not.

Apologies - I put his OBP/SLG/OPS split by mistake.

His AVG/OBP/SLG for 2005 was .201/.247/.370.

Jones v. LHP

2005: .201/.247/.370/.617

3 year: .238/.295/.363/.658

Neifi Perez vs. LHP

3 year: .259/.291/.415/.706

You know you suck when Neifi puts up better numbers than you.

Neifi is swinging from the right side of the plate, when he is facing those lefties, unlike Jones. It's not a fair comparison. However, I do agree that Jones needs to be platooned v.s. LH'ers. Right now it looks like either Grissom or Hairston will be his platoon partner.

I'm scared of Hairston platooned in RF with a lefty on the mound because then Dusty will use Perez instead of Walker at 2B. I'd prefer Walker to play nearly everyday versus righties and leftires, and split Hairston and Jones.

I can't say I'm surprised about BP suggesting this.

Anyone with half a brain could see that he needs one. I'll be screaming all year if he doesn't get one. Every time he faces a left-handed pitcher I will scream.

Posted

Well, I'm not surprised that BP suggested that Jones needs to platoon, but I was surprised they suggested Sing.

I know he's not much with the glove, but Sing did do very well in a pitchers' league last year. I'd rather see him in right than Hairston.

Too bad we didn't get Kevin Mench. I think a Jones/Mench platoon would outproduce Giles for about half the cost.

I don't think they would outproduce Giles(quick, dirty calculation using 3 year splits puts a Jones/Mench platoon at .350 OBP/.865 OPS using 2/3 RHP faced). In fact, I'd rather just have Mench to play full time than Jones. His numbers v. RHP are only marginally worse than Jones, plus he has age on his side to improve.

I agree. I wanted us to get Mench from the beginning. He's young, cheap and better than anyone we considered or signed to play outfield IMO.

Jones lifetime vs. LHP: .227/.277/.339 /.616

Those numbers would embarrass Jose Macias. They're not even acceptable for a utility infielder. I can't for the life of me figure out why Jones has been allowed to face LHPs for so long.

If Dusty takes a liking to Grissom Jones might sit vs. most LHP's. That would be one of the rare cases when Dusty's fondness for the elderly actually helps the Cubs.

As long as he isn't the second coming of Lenny Harris. He made Michael Jordan look like a decent hitter.
