B.J. Ryan is from Shreveport, and he was in town a few weeks ago. While he was here one of my friends hung out with him a few times. Ryan said a few things I found interesting. He said he really wanted to go to Atl. , but he obviously couldn't pass up that much money. He also said next time he faced Edgar Renteria he "was going to drill that n-word in the ear." I guess it's good they're in seperate leagues this year. Does anyone know why he has something against Renteria?

Maybe Renteria going to Atl tied up funds that Atlanta could've used to sign him? Plausible? :? Doubt it...

Or maybe it had something to do with this??

Not that I doubt B's word, but maybe we should give BJ Ryan the benefit of the doubt here? Maybe things were taken out of context or there was a misunderstanding...I'd hold off on the hate mail for a while yet.

Agreed. All we have to go is heresay. I've said some things, that I WOULD love to able to take back, and I am sure this is something Ryan might regret having said, alledgely.

I'm not a hate mail guy. And assuming it's true, I have a new least favorite player in the AL.

Renteria is Latino not black. At least have some self respect and get your racial slurs right you ignorant bigot. Never talk again BJ Ryan. I hate hillbillies.

Woah, jeez man, we dont even know for sure if this is true. Its second hand questionable information at best.

Exactly. It's not like this was reported in Sports Illustrated like Rocker's comments. Ryan didn't say it in an interview. I'm not saying he didn't say it but I'm not saying that he said it. I wouldn't get too worked up over this.

Are you saying Sports Illustrated is better than me?

I ripped BJ Ryan's [expletive] in HS. Of course, he only threw about 85 then....

I'll never forget when we were playing BJ's team in American Legion in the summer of 93. It was the playoffs, and we were working him over pretty good. He played for the Bossier Phillies, and their crowd was getting on him pretty hard. As he walked off the field after getting pulled, he gave the stands the "bird." I thought it was funny.

BJ is actually from Benton, which is right next door to Shreveport - but that ain't important. That dude can swing the bat too. He hit some incredible bombs in college. BJ's a good guy, I am guessing B was hearing this when he was out drinking - probably with my boy Nate Mixon and Trey Poland - right B?

How do I say this nicely...YES.

Not that it matters, since Ryan was wrong to say that anyway, but whoever told you that hispanics/latinos can't be black? It's not mutually exclusive at all. There are "Latinos" of all races: white, black, various "mixes" (sounds wrong but I can't think of a better word) etc. I'm a white Cuban. Entirely European descent. There are black Cubans (of African descent) too. The same goes for the South/Central American countries, only the Native Americans are much more prominent there. They weren't wiped out by the settlers to the extent that they were here and in Cuba.

The label is just a creation of mainly this country as a product of our country's diversity. Very convenient to lump everyone from Spanish speaking countries into one group even though racially and culturally they are all very different.

Sorry to go off on a history lesson/rant, the topic just strikes a cord (is it chord?) with me, I guess because I'm constantly hearing, "You're Cuban? But you look white!"

Because the N word is a racial slur used for African Americans. Which Edgar is not.

For every person that uses the N-word (or any other racial slur) in public, there are 10 who use it in private. For all we know, half of major league baseball could use racial slurs. I'm not going to have a heart attack over it.

EDIT: To be clear, I am NOT saying its OK to use such words, ever.

I just hate hillbillies, that's all. I went to high school in a hick town after moving there at 16. So annoying and ignorant.

Maybe I'm sensitive, but as a resident of Kentucky, formerly of a hick town, I wish you'd say you hate bigots, racists, or anything else that doesn't denote a certain area of the country, lumping all who live there in with jerks.

No big deal, just my two cents.
