It just so happened that the Cubs got career years out of Smith, Walton, Mitch Williams, Mike Bielecki, Lloyd McClendon and Paul Wilson.
Kyle Farnsworth's buddy was never a Cub. There was a Steve Wilson on the team, as well as Paul Kilgus and Paul Assenmacher. All of them were pitchers.

Wasnt Damon Berryhill our catcher in 89? Im thinking that was pre-Wilken. I remember Mclendon doing some catching during the playoffs but I cant rember for the life of me who was the starting catcher.

Berryhill did some catching in 1989 along with Girardi and Rick Wrona. McClendon played everywhere.

It appears that Wrona and Girardi split time starting there in the playoffs. Berryhill played 91 games in 1989, but if I remember correctly, he got hurt and Wrona was called up. Girardi played 59 games and Wrona played 38.

Retrosheet has Wrona and Girardi playing in the playoffs.

I think Berryhill hurt his shoulder that year. He was the starter to begin the season (with rookie Girardi as backup). He missed the entire postseason, then played in only 17 games in 1990 (probably still recovering from the injury most of the year), hitting .189. He played in 62 games for the Cubs in 1991 (showing consistency by hitting .189 again) before being traded to Atlanta along with Mike Bielicki for Turk Wendell and Yorkis Perez.

That is my memory of the above as well. I remember being excited about that trade, thinking that Damon was not much more than a good back up and Mike was, well, just Mike. Wendell and Perez had done well in the minors up to that point and the future seemed bright. But we never figured out to use Wendell and I believe Perez was released and bounced around MLB for a while after.

.....and I believe Perez was released and bounced around MLB for a while after.
He pitched in three games for the Cubs in 1991 (his first major league action) and was released after the season. He didn't return to the majors until 1994 (with Florida) and had a journeyman career where he spent at least some time in the majors every year through 2002 (except for 2001). He was 14-15 with 2 saves and a 4.44 ERA for his career (entirely as a relief pitcher; no career starts).

Ah, my bust. I forgot that it was Ryne and Grace who played well and Hawk who didn't show.

I was 13, and even then I recognized that there was no way Mike Bielecki was going to repeat the year he had in 89'. And who was that Maddux kid anyway? When he came up all I knew was that he has a fu-man-chu 'stache.

He "showed", but at that point in the season he was pretty much playing on one leg since the cartilege in his knee was almost non-existent.

I recall that as well, and certainly did not mean to insult the Hawk, whom I still cite as a fave Cub and would gladly encourage my son to emulate (especially how he came out swinging at Eric Show in 87' :eye: )

Indeed it was sad, I remember on several occasions, in crucial situations, the Giants pitched around, was it Grace?, to get Dawson, I think he went something like 0-13 with RISP. He almost burned them in game 3 (at SF) when, late in the game, with runners on, he cranked one to CF only to have the wind knock it down. Believe the Giant CF caught it with his back against the wall. The best team in NL definitely didn't represent it in the 89 WS.
