If Zambrano was looking for a 3-4 year deal and Boras was trying to get him to settle for trying to max out on a series of 1 year deals before free agency, then this is a good thing. But I'm always concerned when players dump agents mid-negotiation. Even if the team "wins" the battle and gets a good deal, it often blows up in their face later when the player realizes the problem.

i don't think there's a real negative here. boras, from what i understand, is the absolute worst baseball agent to deal with. anything bad that happens to the cubs in zambrano negotiations probably won't be any worse than what would happen had he not fired boras.

Am I the only one who wishes they'd try to sign Carlos to a long term deal that buys out his first year of free agency? I'd sure love to know for a fact he'll be here another 4 years...

Any details?

Pure hopefull speculation: Big Z wanted to go for long term security and Boras wanted to go for short run profit.

Pure pessimistic speculation: Big Z thinks he is worth more than Boras was going to offer in arbitration.

Carlos really really likes playing for the Cubs. I'm sure all the fan-love for him exhibited at the Cubs Convention was quickly relayed his direction as well. I agree that Carlos probably prefers the security of an extension through his arby years out to free agency, but that isn't Boras' nom de plume. He surely advised Carlos to go for maximum bucks, which would mean arbitration each and every year.

So Big Z offers to "keel" Boras and tell him to shut up, mang. Hehe....wouldn't be surprised at all to see Z pick up Katz as his new agent.

Boras has been fired before. My guess is that there are philosphical differences between what Zambrano wants and what Scott Boras wants for him. At this stage, it could be a good sign. My guess is Boras was wanting to go to arbitration and Zambrano either wanted to sign before the process as has been the Cubs custom or possibly work on a long term deal which Boras almost never wants with his players.

At the moment, I see this as a very good sign that Zambrano wishes to remain a Cub for a long time.

Thought: Big Z might want to stay with the Cubs, and Boras might have been trying to convince him to jump at the first opportunity for the highest bidder.

That's my optimistic side talking.

I think your pessimistic speculation is pretty far-fetched considering you are talking about Boras.

I can't wait to learn more details, but your post would be ideal.

Note to Zambrano: Can you please give Mark Pawelek a call & advise him to do the same?

I think Mark's repped by Bizaro Boras, because he's already done something completly un-Boras repped player like (sign on draft day out of HS)
