arbitration always seems to confuse me:

 

Dodgers closer Eric Gagne and Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter both made $5 million in their first year of arbitration eligibility. That's the highest figure ever for a one-year deal regardless of position category.

 

How did Dontrelle "easily break the record" when this two each earned more than him. I'm not faulting the article - rather my own understanding of what's being talked about. So what are they talking about?

I think what it means is Willis set the record for 1 year contracts, Jeter and Gagne got more per year, but they were multi year contracts.
